Vegetative Growth of Binahong (Andredera Cordifolia (TEN.) Steenis) from Medan by Giving Coconut Water and Banana Stubble Extract
Introduction
Understanding the Importance of Binahong
Binahong, scientifically known as Andredera Cordifolia, is a medicinal plant that has been utilized in traditional medicine for its numerous benefits. This plant has been used to treat various health conditions, including diabetes, accelerate postoperative recovery, and overcome internal diseases. The plant's potential in providing natural remedies has sparked interest in its cultivation and research. In this study, we aim to explore the effect of giving coconut water and banana stubble extract on the vegetative growth of Binahong from several different locations in Medan.
Background of the Study
Research Conducted at the Kasa House of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra
Research conducted at the Kasa House of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, from June to August 2019, aimed to investigate the effect of giving coconut water and banana stubble extract on the vegetative growth of Binahong from several different locations in Medan. The study employed a random factorial group design with two treatment factors. The first factor was the origin of the planting material, consisting of three locations:
- Jalan Marelan Pasar I Tengah
- Jalan Ampera Timur Setia Budi
- Jalan Unity Medan Helvetia
The second factor was related to the treatment of giving coconut water and banana stubble extract, which consisted of four treatments:
- P0: Control (without treatment)
- P1: Giving coconut water 40%
- P2: Giving a 40% banana stubble extract
- P3: 40% coconut water combination and 40% banana stubble extract
Methodology
Experimental Design and Treatment
The study used a random factorial group design to investigate the effect of giving coconut water and banana stubble extract on the vegetative growth of Binahong. The experiment consisted of two treatment factors: the origin of the planting material and the treatment of giving coconut water and banana stubble extract. The experiment was conducted in a controlled environment, and the results were analyzed using statistical methods.
Results
Effect of Origin of Planting Material and Treatment on Vegetative Growth
The results of the study showed that the origin of the planting material significantly increased the length of the plant at the age of 1-2 weeks after planting (MSPT) and root volume. The provision of coconut water and banana stubble extract also showed positive results, where the growth of plant lengths increased at the age of 2-4 MSPT. However, it was interesting to note that there was no significant interaction between the origin of the planting material and the administration of the two treatments in increasing the growth of Binahong.
Discussion
Significance of Origin of Planting Material and Treatment on Vegetative Growth
The results of this study emphasize the importance of choosing quality planting materials and providing appropriate additional nutrients to support plant growth. The study also opened up opportunities for further exploration of natural and environmentally friendly solutions in agriculture, especially in an effort to improve the quality of medicinal plants.
Conclusion
Contributions to the Development of More Effective and Sustainable Cultivation Techniques
By understanding more about the factors that influence the growth of Binahong, it is expected to contribute to the development of more effective and sustainable cultivation techniques in the future. This study provides valuable insights into the importance of choosing quality planting materials and providing appropriate additional nutrients to support plant growth. The study also highlights the potential of natural and environmentally friendly solutions in agriculture, which can lead to more sustainable and effective cultivation techniques.
