Use Of Mouthwash In Students Of The Faculty Of Dentistry, Faculty Of Engineering And The Faculty Of Cultural Sciences At The University Of North Sumatra
Introduction
Mouthwash is a solution or fluid used to refresh the oral cavity and clean the mouth from plaque and microorganisms that cause oral cavity diseases. The use of mouthwash has become a common practice among individuals, including students, to maintain good oral health. However, the extent of its use among students of the University of North Sumatra (USU) is not well-documented. This study aims to determine the percentage of use of mouthwash among students of the Faculty of Dentistry (FKG), the Faculty of Engineering (FT), and the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) at USU. In addition, this study will also discuss the characteristics of the use of mouthwash, including the purpose, the content of active ingredients, frequency, duration, and time of use.
Methodology
The type of research conducted is a descriptive survey with the research population in the form of FKG, FT, and FIB students in USU. The sample was taken randomly using the random sampling method, where students were asked to fill out a questionnaire designed to collect data related to the use of mouthwash. The data obtained are then processed using a computer and analyzed descriptively, and calculated in the form of percentage.
Results
The results showed that the percentage of the highest use of mouthwash was found in FKG students with 55%, followed by 46% FIB students, and 39% FT students. In addition, it was found that the use of mouthwash is more commonly done by women than men, with a percentage of women reaching 50.9% while men are 40.2%.
Characteristics of Mouthwash Use
From further analysis, the main purpose of respondents in using mouthwash is to eliminate bad breath, which was recorded as many as 73.6%. The most widely used active ingredient content in mouthwash is a mixture of phenols and essential oils containing thymol, menthol, and eucalyptol, with a proportion of 72.14%. The most common frequency of mouthwash use is twice a day, which is carried out by 49.3% of respondents. The most widely done rinse duration is for 30-60 seconds, with 55% of respondents choosing this duration. The most common time for use of mouthwash is after brushing teeth, which is carried out by 80.7% of respondents.
Discussion
From the results of this study, it can be concluded that the use of mouthwash among FKG students shows a higher percentage than FT and FIB students. This finding is important to consider the habit of maintaining oral health among students and can be taken into consideration for a more effective oral health campaign. In addition, by understanding the characteristics of the use of mouthwash, the university and faculty can design an educational program that is more in accordance with the needs of students to increase awareness of the importance of good oral health care.
Conclusion
In conclusion, this study provides valuable information on the use of mouthwash among students of the University of North Sumatra. The results of this study can be used as a reference for the university and faculty to design an educational program that is more effective in promoting good oral health care among students. Furthermore, this study highlights the importance of maintaining good oral health among students, which can have a positive impact on their overall health and well-being.
Recommendations
Based on the results of this study, the following recommendations are made:
- The university and faculty should design an educational program that is more in accordance with the needs of students to increase awareness of the importance of good oral health care.
- The university and faculty should provide more information and resources on the use of mouthwash, including its benefits and proper use.
- The university and faculty should encourage students to maintain good oral health habits, including regular brushing and flossing, and regular dental check-ups.
Limitations
This study has several limitations, including:
- The sample size was limited to students of the Faculty of Dentistry, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Faculty of Cultural Sciences at the University of North Sumatra.
- The study only collected data on the use of mouthwash and did not collect data on other oral health habits.
- The study only collected data from students and did not collect data from other stakeholders, such as faculty members and staff.
Future Research Directions
Future research should aim to:
- Conduct a larger-scale study that includes students from all faculties at the University of North Sumatra.
- Collect data on other oral health habits, such as regular brushing and flossing, and regular dental check-ups.
- Collect data from other stakeholders, such as faculty members and staff, to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the use of mouthwash among students.
