Introduction

The green lane is an essential component of urban planning, providing a natural and aesthetically pleasing space for residents and visitors alike. Located along roads and serving as a road separator, the green lane plays a crucial role in maintaining air quality by absorbing pollutants in the air. However, the health of trees in these areas is often overlooked, leading to potential damage and harm to the environment. This study aims to analyze the type and level of tree damage in the green lane in the eastern part of Medan, a city in Indonesia.

Background

The vegetation in this path functions naturally as an atmospheric cleaning, absorbing pollutants in the air. However, the health of trees in these areas is often overlooked, leading to potential damage and harm to the environment. This study aims to analyze the type and level of tree damage in the green lane in the eastern part of Medan.

Methodology

This research was conducted in several sub-districts in Medan City, namely Medan Amplas District, Medan Area District, Medan Denai District, Medan Kota District, Medan Perjuangan District, and Medan Tembung District in May to June 2016. Observations were made by observing trees from the base to the end of the stem, thoroughly along the green lane. Damage assessment uses criteria based on the Forest Health Monitoring (FHM) method.

Results

The results of the study showed that the most dominant tree species in the green lane were Angsana (P. indica), with a total of 639 trees or around 62.40% of the entire trees studied. Damage to the branch section was recorded at 38%, on the stem of 34%, and in the tree canopy section of 28%. Six types of damage found include: cancer, further weathered, open wounds, exudation, broken branches, and leaf color changes.

Discussion

Overall, the data shows that 55% of the trees under study are in a healthy class, while 44% suffered minor damage and 1% suffered moderate damage. This indicates that most trees in the green lane are still in good condition, but still need attention and care for trees that are damaged. The existence of the green lane is very important in maintaining air quality in the city of Medan, especially in the East which is quite dense. Angsana trees, as the dominant species, not only function as greening, but also have significant aesthetic values ​​and ecological benefits.

Conclusion

Damage such as cancer and open wounds can be an indication of pests or diseases that attack trees. Therefore, precautions such as pruning of dead branches, treatment of infections, and periodic monitoring need to be done to maintain the health of trees. In addition, supervision and maintenance can also involve the local community to be more active in protecting the surrounding green environment. With this research, it is expected that related parties, such as the Department of Environment and the community, can better understand the importance of trees in the green lane. The appropriate steps in the care and monitoring of trees can help maintain the ecological function of the green path while improving the quality of life of the surrounding community.
