Introduction

The use of orthodontic tools can still affect the number of bacteria in saliva, and increase the number of gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus. Patients who use orthodontic tools still need additional chemical agents, such as mouthwash, to inhibit bacterial growth. One of the natural ingredients that has the potential as the basis of herbal mouthwash is the tuber of ant nest (Myrmecodia pendanan), which is proven to have an antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus aureus with a minimum negative impact on the orthodontic component.

Background

Staphylococcus aureus is a type of bacteria that can cause various health problems, including infections in the mouth area and gums, especially in patients with fixed orthodontic devices that are at higher risk of bacterial growth. Therefore, an effective prevention method is needed to reduce the growth of these bacteria. The antibacterial content contained in ant nest tubers extract (Myrmecodia Pendanan) offers a natural alternative that can be used to overcome this problem. Ant nest tubers contain various bioactive compounds that have been proven to stop the growth of bacteria, as well as safe for oral health and do not damage the structure of orthodontic tools.

Methodology

This study aims to analyze the antibacterial activity of the ant nest tubers extract (Myrmecodia pendanan) in reducing the number of Staphylococcus aureus colonies by varying contact time. The sample used in this study consisted of 45 EdgeWise metal brackets 0.22 inch Ormco for insisor teeth, which were treated with mouthwash containing ant tubers extracts at a concentration of 0.8%, 1.6%, and 3.2%, and chlorhexidine 0.2% and artificial saliva for contact duration for 10, 30 and 60 seconds.

Results

The results showed that the average number of Staphylococcus aureus (CFUS/ml) colonies was 600.13 ± 252.96 during the contact time of 10 seconds, 463.87 ± 309.89 during the contact time of 30 seconds, and 359.73 ± 362, 56 at the time of contact 60 seconds. This finding indicates a decrease in the number of staphylococcus aureus bacterial colonies along with an increase in contact time, with a concentration of 1.6% to the most optimal, especially at contact time of 60 seconds.

Analysis and Explanation

In the world of orthodontic, infections caused by bacterial growth such as Staphylococcus aureus are quite serious problems. The use of mouthwash containing ant nest tubers extract can be a natural and effective way to prevent the growth of these bacteria.

Research Implications

The results of this study provide valuable information for orthodontic practitioners and patients regarding the use of natural ingredients as an alternative in maintaining oral health. By adopting the use of mouthwash based on ant tubers extract, is expected to reduce the number of pathogenic bacteria in the mouth of patients who use orthodontic tools, thus helping to prevent infection and ensure more successful and comfortable orthodontic treatments.

Conclusion

The use of mouthwash containing ant nest tubers extract not only provides benefits in terms of oral health, but also promotes a more natural approach in orthodontic treatment.

Recommendations

Based on the results of this study, it is recommended that orthodontic practitioners and patients use mouthwash containing ant nest tubers extract as a natural and effective way to prevent the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The use of mouthwash containing ant nest tubers extract can be a natural and effective way to prevent the growth of these bacteria, and promote a more natural approach in orthodontic treatment.

Limitations

This study has some limitations, including the use of a small sample size and the limited duration of the study. Further studies are needed to confirm the results of this study and to explore the potential of ant nest tubers extract as a natural ingredient in mouthwash.

Future Directions

Future studies should focus on exploring the potential of ant nest tubers extract as a natural ingredient in mouthwash, and on investigating the effects of different concentrations and contact times on the antibacterial activity of ant nest tubers extract. Additionally, further studies are needed to confirm the results of this study and to explore the potential of ant nest tubers extract as a natural ingredient in mouthwash.
