Introduction

Methodology

This research is divided into two stages. The first stage, observations of the development of melinjo seeds from when the flowers bloom to reach physiological maturity. Observed parameters include the diameter and length of the seeds, fresh and dry weights, and the content of seed water. This research was conducted at the Johor Building, Medan, with weekly observations and using 10 seeds for each observation, repeated three times.

The second stage, using physiological mendino seeds from the first stage to study the effect of temperature and duration of heating on seed germination. This study uses factorial random group design (rack) with two factors. The first factor is the heating temperature with four levels, namely 30 °C (T1), 35 °C (T2), 40 °C (T3), and 45 °C (T4). The second factor is the duration of heating with four levels, namely 2 weeks (P1), 3 weeks (P2), 4 weeks (P3), and 5 weeks (P4), so that 16 combinations of treatment are obtained. The parameters observed at this stage include the percentage of germination, the speed of growth, and the percentage of abnormal seeds.

Results

The results of the first stage of research showed that at the age of 53 days after antesis (HSA), the diameter and length of the melinjo seeds experienced a significant increase and began to slow down at the age of 95 HSA. Fresh and dry weight of seeds has increased rapidly at the age of 67 HSA and becomes stable at the age of 95 HSA. The seed water content has increased rapidly at the age of 18 HSA, reached its peak at the age of 67 HSA, and experienced a drastic decrease at the age of 74 HSA. The physiological mature phase of melinjo seeds is achieved at the age of 102 HSA, characterized by dark red seed skin and blackish mesocarp.

The second stage of research shows that the interaction between temperature and heating time has a very significant effect on the percentage of germination, abnormal seeds, and growing speed. The percentage of the best germination (83.33%) was achieved in the combination of T3P1 treatment, namely heating at 40 °C for 2 weeks. These results indicate that heating at 40 °C for 2 weeks is the most effective treatment for accelerating and increasing melinjo seed germination. Other treatments that also show positive results are T2P4 (80.00%), T2P2 (61.67%), and T2P3 (51.67%).

Discussion

The results of this study indicate that the interaction between temperature and heating time has a significant effect on the percentage of germination, abnormal seeds, and growing speed. The optimal temperature and duration of heating for accelerating and increasing melinjo seed germination is 40 °C for 2 weeks. This study concluded that heating at a temperature of 40 °C for 2 weeks can increase and accelerate melinjo seed germination. However, further research needs to be carried out using varied and more dynamic temperatures to optimize the process of germination of melinjo seeds.

The results of this study are expected to be a reference in the development of melinjo cultivation technology, especially in terms of accelerating the germination process and increasing plant productivity.
