The Role of the Mother in the Minangkabau and Batak Families in Tegal Sari III Medan Area Village

Introduction

The family is the smallest unit in the community, consisting of fathers, mothers, children, and other members. In this family structure, a mother plays a very important role due to her natural function in maintaining and caring for the family. In Tegal Sari III Medan Area Village, there are two different ethnic groups, namely Minangkabau and Batak, each with a unique kinship system and tradition. This article aims to discuss the role of mothers in these two families and their significance in creating good and harmonious family relationships.

The Minangkabau Family: A Matrilineal Kinship System

The Minangkabau community adheres to a matrilineal kinship system, where the lineage is withdrawn from the mother's side. In this context, a mother is not just a caregiver, but also a source of teachings and education for her children. She plays a role in pregnant, giving birth, breastfeeding, and educating children with Minangkabau cultural values. The role of the mother in the Minangkabau family not only includes domestic aspects, but also involves decision making and management of resources in the family.

The Minangkabau family is known for its strong matriarchal system, where women hold a significant amount of power and influence in the family. This is reflected in the way they manage the household, make decisions, and educate their children. The mother is considered the head of the household, and her role is to ensure the well-being and prosperity of the family. In this context, the mother is not just a caregiver, but also a leader and a role model for her children.

The Batak Family: A Patrilineal Kinship System

Conversely, the Batak tribe applies a patrilineal system, where the lineage is determined by the male. In this context, the position of men is considered higher, and children are under the rule of the husband. Nevertheless, the role of mothers in the Batak family is also very vital. The mother is responsible for the education and formation of children's character, even though her position may not be as strong in the matrilineal system.

In the Batak family, the mother plays a significant role in educating her children and teaching them important values and traditions. She is responsible for passing down the cultural heritage and customs of the Batak people to the next generation. The mother is also expected to manage the household and ensure the well-being of her family. Although the position of the mother may not be as strong as in the Minangkabau family, her role is still crucial in maintaining the harmony and stability of the family.
