The Role of Peer Support for Career Maturity in Minang Migrants Students at the University of North Sumatra
Introduction
Career maturity is a crucial aspect of an individual's life, encompassing their cognitive attitude and readiness in making future choices. This concept is closely related to the exploration or knowledge of the work that is in demand, which in turn supports individuals in completing the tasks of their career development. In the context of migrant students, especially for Minang students in the University of North Sumatra, support from peers plays a significant role in forming their career maturity. This study aims to examine the role of peer support for career maturity among Minang students who are studying at the university.
Background
The University of North Sumatra is a prominent institution of higher learning in Indonesia, attracting students from various backgrounds, including migrant students. Minang students, in particular, are known for their strong cultural heritage and values. However, as migrant students, they often face challenges in adapting to a new environment, which can impact their career development. Peer support, therefore, becomes a vital factor in helping these students navigate their academic and professional journey.
Methodology
This study involved 158 Minang nomads at the University of North Sumatra as a sample. The sampling method used was the accidental sampling technique, which allows researchers to get data from the population that is accidentally available. To measure social support, researchers used the scale of social support based on Sarafino & Smith's theory (2011), while to measure career maturity, a career maturity scale was used based on Super's theory (1992). By using simple linear regression analysis, this study produced a p (0.000) value that is smaller than 0.05, which indicates that there is a significant influence on the support of peers on the career maturity of the Minang nomads.
The Role of Peer Support
Peer support is an essential factor in developing student career maturity. In this context, peers not only function as friends in association but also as a source of information, motivation, and encouragement to take steps towards career goals. Good social support from peers can increase students' confidence in exploring various career choices that exist, which are very necessary when they are far from home and familiar environment.
Career Maturity and Peer Support
Career maturity does not occur instantly. This process involves experience, learning, and social interaction. Students who get emotional and practical support from their friends tend to have a better understanding of existing career choices and how to achieve these goals. Peers can provide valuable information about job opportunities, internship experiences, or even tips for dealing with job interviews.
The Impact of Peer Support on Career Development
In addition, students who are in a positive and supportive social environment tend to be more motivated to participate in extracurricular activities that can improve their skills and knowledge. These activities contribute to self-development and help students identify their interests and potential in certain career fields.
Implications for Educational Institutions
Seeing the importance of the role of peer support, educational institutions such as the University of North Sumatra can take steps to strengthen social networks among students, especially nomads. Mentoring programs, learning groups, and social activities can be one way to increase interaction between students and build strong social support. Thus, students not only benefit from academic, but also in terms of their career development.
Conclusion
Overall, peer support has a significant influence on the career maturity of Minang students in the University of North Sumatra. This study shows that strengthening social relations among students can be a strategic step in helping them achieve success in the future. By recognizing the importance of peer support, educational institutions can take proactive measures to foster a supportive environment that promotes career development and maturity among their students.
