Introduction

The Labuhanbatu Bilah River is a vital waterway that flows through the Labuhanbatu Regency in North Sumatra Province, Indonesia. This river plays a crucial role in the lives of the local community, serving as a source of water for drinking, agriculture, fisheries, and transportation. However, the existence of various community activities along the river can have a significant impact on the water quality. Therefore, it is essential to understand the changes in water quality caused by these activities. One approach to measuring water quality is to analyze macrozoobentos as bioindicators.

The Importance of Macrozoobentos as Bioindicators

Macrozoobentos, which refers to the large invertebrate animals that live in aquatic environments, can serve as valuable indicators of water quality. Methodology

This study aimed to identify macrozoobenthos species that can be used as bioindicators of water quality in the Labuhanbatu Bilah River. The study was conducted for 12 months, starting from November 2016 to October 2017. Macrozoobentos sampling was carried out using the purposive sampling method at 10 observation stations. The samples were taken using the Ekman Gap and Surber net, and then identified in the laboratory.

Results

The results of the study showed that the water quality in the upstream section of the Bilah River (stations 1, 2, and 3) is classified as good, while stations 4, 5, and 6 are classified as moderate quality. In the downstream section (stations 8, 9, and 10), the water quality is classified as poor. During the study, 2 phylums, 4 classes, 11 orders, 20 families, and 27 macrozoobentos species were found, with the Insekta class being the most dominant group with 19 species.

Diversity Index and Biotic Index

The diversity index value ranges from 0.9872 to 2,441, indicating variations in the diversity of existing species. The biotic index value ranges from 0 to 15, which indicates the condition of the ecosystem and water quality.

Macrozoobentos as Bioindicators

In the relatively clean upstream section of the river, macrozoobentos that function as bioindicators mostly belong to the Coleoptera Order, such as Psephenus Texanus, and the Ephemeroptera Order, such as Heptagenia. Meanwhile, at the location with moderate pollution, macrozoobentos from the Odonata Order, namely Aphylla Angustifolia and Ceriagrion Teteellum, can be used as indicators of water quality. In the downstream section that experiences severe pollution, species of the Gastropod order, especially Pleurocera Canaliculate, show a negative impact on water quality.

Conclusion

Through this research, it can be concluded that macrozoobentos has great potential as a bioindicator to monitor water quality conditions in the Bilah River. This knowledge is very useful for the authorities in planning and managing the management of water resources and maintaining the balance of ecosystems in the Bilah River, which is a source of life for the local community. With the right approach, we can maintain the quality of the environment while supporting the sustainability of natural resources in the area.
