Introduction
Dental and oral health is an essential aspect of overall health, and it is crucial to maintain good oral hygiene to prevent various dental and oral health problems. The main factors that affect dental and oral health are knowledge and attitude. Knowledge is obtained through sensing, while attitude is a tendency in thinking, perception, and acting. This study aims to investigate the relationship between knowledge and attitudes in maintaining dental and oral health in state junior high school students in Medan Denai District.
Background
Maintaining good dental and oral health is essential for overall health. However, many people, especially adolescents, do not prioritize dental and oral health. This can lead to various dental and oral health problems, such as tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath. The main factors that affect dental and oral health are knowledge and attitude. Knowledge is obtained through sensing, while attitude is a tendency in thinking, perception, and acting. A positive attitude towards dental and oral health can lead to better oral hygiene practices, such as regular brushing and flossing.
Methodology
This study uses a cross-sectional design with a correlative descriptive method. The research subjects are students of UPT SMPN 23 Medan, a state junior high school in Medan Denai District. The data was collected through a questionnaire and analyzed using the Chi-Square test. The questionnaire consisted of questions about knowledge and attitudes towards dental and oral health, as well as demographic information such as age and sex.
Results
The results of this study showed that there was no significant relationship between knowledge and attitude towards oral health care (p = 0.066). However, a significant relationship was found between knowledge and age (p = 0.048) and attitude with age (p = 0.000). This indicates that the older the age of students, the higher the level of knowledge and positive attitudes towards the maintenance of dental and oral health. Additionally, a significant relationship was found between attitude and sex (p = 0.039), indicating that the age and gender factor has a different influence on knowledge and attitudes in the maintenance of dental and oral health.
Discussion
The results of this study indicate that although good knowledge and attitude can improve the maintenance of dental and oral health, other factors such as age and sex also play an important role. This shows that dental and oral health education efforts need to be adjusted to the characteristics of students. The study also highlights the importance of considering the age and gender factor in dental and oral health education programs.
