The Relationship Between Knowledge and Attitudes of Mothers with the Behavior of Providing Breastfeeding Food in Toddlers Aged 6-24 Months at the Padang Bulan Health Center

Introduction

The nutritional condition of children in Indonesia is a serious problem that affects many families. One of the main causes of this problem is the ignorance of mothers regarding the exact administration of breastfeeding and ASI ASI (MP-ASI) food. This is often due to factors such as timeliness, frequency, type, amount of food ingredients, as well as inappropriate processing methods. In addition, the importance of basic immunization for toddlers should also not be ignored. In this context, the administration of MP-ASI is very crucial, especially for babies who are over six months old, which requires the addition of nutritious food to support their growth and development.

The Importance of MP-ASI Administration

MP-ASI administration is a crucial aspect of a child's nutrition, especially after six months of age. At this stage, babies require additional nutrients to support their growth and development. However, many mothers in Indonesia are unaware of the correct administration of MP-ASI, leading to nutritional problems in children. This study aims to investigate the relationship between knowledge and attitudes of mothers towards the behavior of giving MP-ASI to toddlers aged 6 to 24 months at the Padang Bulan Health Center, Medan Selayang.

Research Purposes

The main purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between knowledge and attitudes of mothers towards the behavior of giving MP-ASI to toddlers aged 6 to 24 months at the Padang Bulan Health Center. By understanding this relationship, it is expected to find ways to improve the quality of MP-ASI administration that can reduce nutritional problems in children.

Research Methods

This study uses an analytical descriptive method with a cross-sectional design. Samples were taken randomly from all mothers who had babies aged 6 to 24 months, with a total of 53 respondents. Data was collected through interviews with a questionnaire to obtain more accurate information about the knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of the provision of MP-ASI.

Research Results

The results of this study showed that:

  • Mother's knowledge of MP-ASI is classified as good (52.8%).
  • Mother's attitude towards the administration of MP-ASI is classified as (75.5%).
  • Good MP-ASI administration behavior recorded 62.3%.

Statistical analysis shows a significant relationship between mother's knowledge and the behavior of MP-ASI administration (p = 0.026), as well as a significant relationship between the mother's attitude and the behavior of the administration of MP-ASI (p = 0.040). This indicates that both the knowledge and attitudes of mothers play an important role in determining their actions in giving MP-ASI to children.

Conclusion

Based on the results of this study, it is recommended to health workers at the Padang Bulan Health Center to be more routinely counseled to mothers who have babies. This effort can include counseling regarding the correct pattern of administration of MP-ASI in accordance with nutritional standards. The approach to local community leaders is also important to help in counseling so that information about the provision of MP-ASI can reach more mothers and increase their awareness of the importance of nutrition for toddlers.

Recommendations

To improve the quality of MP-ASI administration, the following recommendations are made:

  • Health workers at the Padang Bulan Health Center should be more routinely counseled to mothers who have babies.
  • Counseling should include information about the correct pattern of administration of MP-ASI in accordance with nutritional standards.
  • Local community leaders should be approached to help in counseling so that information about the provision of MP-ASI can reach more mothers and increase their awareness of the importance of nutrition for toddlers.

Implications

Increased knowledge and attitudes of mothers in giving MP-ASI will not only have a positive impact on children's health, but will also help create a healthier and smarter generation in the future. This study highlights the importance of education and counseling in improving the quality of MP-ASI administration and reducing nutritional problems in children.

Limitations

This study has several limitations, including:

  • The sample size is relatively small, which may limit the generalizability of the results.
  • The study only focuses on mothers who have babies aged 6 to 24 months, which may not be representative of all mothers in Indonesia.

Future Research Directions

Future research should focus on:

  • Investigating the relationship between knowledge and attitudes of mothers towards the behavior of giving MP-ASI to toddlers aged 6 to 24 months in different settings.
  • Developing effective education and counseling programs to improve the quality of MP-ASI administration and reduce nutritional problems in children.
