Introduction

The Talk Show Mata Najwa, a popular Indonesian talk show, has been discussing various themes, including the Covid-19 pandemic. This study aims to analyze the language politeness used by the host and resource persons in the show, focusing on the sociopragmatic approach. By applying the theory of politeness put forward by Brown and Levinson, this study aims to explore the existence of two categories of politeness strategy: positive and negative politeness strategies.
Background of the Study
The Covid-19 pandemic has brought about significant changes in the way people communicate. With the rise of social distancing and remote work, face-to-face interactions have become limited. The Talk Show Mata Najwa, which discusses various themes, including health and wellness, has become a platform for people to share their experiences and opinions. The show's host and resource persons use language politeness to maintain a professional image and respect the audience. This study aims to analyze the language politeness used in the show, focusing on the sociopragmatic approach.
Methodology
This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach, which aims to describe and analyze how the host and resource persons communicate in the context of language politeness. The data used as the research source is taken from the sentences contained in the conversation interaction between the host and the resource person at the talk show. Data collection is carried out through a refer technique, which involves listening to recordings, and noted techniques, where researchers record the patterns of politeness found.
Theoretical Framework
The theory of politeness put forward by Brown and Levinson explains the existence of two categories of politeness strategy: positive and negative politeness strategies. Positive politeness strategies aim to maintain a positive relationship between the speaker and the hearer, while negative politeness strategies aim to avoid causing offense or imposing on the hearer's time or space. The theory consists of 15 negative politeness strategies and 10 positive politeness strategies.
Results
The results of this study showed that of the 292 analyzed data, positive politeness strategies were more dominant with a total of 207 data, while negative politeness strategies were recorded at 85 data. Among the positive politeness strategies, the 4th strategy is the most often used with 98 data, while in negative politeness, the 2nd strategy appears most often with 37 data. Interestingly, not all politeness strategies can be found in interactions that occur. Realization of positive politeness strategies is limited to several strategies such as the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 11th, 12th, 12th, 12th, 12th, 12th, and 13. Meanwhile, the realization of negative politeness strategies was identified in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, and 8th strategies.

The use of positive politeness strategies by the host and resource persons aims to maintain a professional image and respect the audience. This is important, especially when discussing sensitive themes such as Covid-19, where good communication can help build trust and comfort among viewers. On the other hand, negative politeness strategies are chosen to refine speech and express opinions without hurting feelings or limiting the speaking space of the other person.

Through this study, it can be concluded that the politeness of the language in the Talk Show Mata Najwa which discusses Covid-19 does not only function as a protector of image, but also as a bridge to build better interactions in crucial situations. Politeness in language becomes an important tool in conveying messages, especially when answering the challenges of communication in the pandemic that is full of uncertainty.
