It is interesting to note that the prevalence of prediabetes globally increases rapidly, even predicted by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) that in 2030, around 398 million people worldwide will experience prediabetes. In Indonesia alone, the incidence of prediabetes is quite high, with a prevalence reaching 26.3% in the condition of the fasting blood sugar is disrupted (GDPT) and 30.8% in the condition of blood sugar when disrupted (TGT). Proper knowledge and prevention of prediabetes becomes very important, especially for adolescents, because it can affect their health in the future.

This study aims to assess the level of knowledge of students in Medan Methodist-2 High School regarding prediabetes and how they prevent risk factors related to these conditions. Descriptive Study with Cross-Sectional Design

This research is descriptive with cross-sectional study design. The number of samples is determined using the Slovin formula, which produces 94 respondents from students in class X, XI, and XII. Data collection activities were carried out between July and November 2021 using a questionnaire.

Level of Knowledge and Prevention Efforts

The results showed that the level of knowledge of respondents about prediabetes was mostly in the good category, with a percentage of 70.2%. Analysis based on age indicates that the 15-year-old age group has the highest level of knowledge, which is 24.5%. From the class side, class XII students showed a better level of knowledge, reaching 27.7%. Based on family history, respondents who did not have a family history related to diabetes showed the best results in knowledge of prediabetes, which is 48.9%. However, when assessing the prevention efforts made, the majority of respondents belong to the sufficient category, with a percentage of 54.3%.

Conclusion

Implications for Education and Prevention

From the results of this study, it can be concluded that the Medan Methodist-2 High School students generally have a good level of knowledge about prediabetes. However, even though their level of knowledge is good, the precautions they take on the risk of prediabetes still need to be improved, which shows an urgent need to conduct further education regarding prevention. Sustainable education and an increase in awareness about the importance of healthy lifestyles will greatly contribute to the reduction in the risk of prediabetes and diabetes among adolescents.
