The Importance of Reproductive Hygiene: A Study on the Knowledge, Attitudes, and Actions of Medical Students in North Sumatra

Introduction

Reproductive health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, especially for women. Leucorrhoea, also known as fluorine albus, is a common symptom in the female genital tract characterized by excessive mucus of the vulva. This condition can be fatal if left untreated, causing endometritis, pelvic inflammatory syndrome (PID), and even cervical cancer. Therefore, maintaining the cleanliness of the reproductive organs is essential to prevent vaginal discharge and ensure a healthy reproductive system. This study aims to assess the level of knowledge, attitudes, and actions of students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra, regarding the hygiene of reproductive and vaginal discharge organs.

Background

The University of North Sumatra is one of the leading institutions in Indonesia, providing quality education to its students. The Faculty of Medicine is a prestigious institution that produces skilled medical professionals. However, despite the importance of reproductive health, there is a lack of awareness among students about the hygiene of reproductive organs. This study aims to fill this knowledge gap and provide insights into the level of knowledge, attitudes, and actions of medical students in North Sumatra.

Methodology

This study used a descriptive cross-sectional design, involving the completion of questionnaires by the population under study. The research population consisted of students from the classes of 2017, 2018, and 2019 from the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra. A minimum of 84 subjects was required, which was achieved using proportionate stratified random sampling techniques. The data obtained was analyzed using SPSS software to produce accurate information.

Results

The results of this study indicate that out of a total of 174 respondents, 83 female students (47.7%) had a good level of knowledge, while 86 students (49.4%) had sufficient knowledge, and 5 female students (2.9%) had a lack of knowledge. In terms of attitude, 131 female students (75.3%) stated strongly agree, while 43 female students (24.7%) agreed with the statement submitted. With regard to action, 118 female students (67.8%) showed good action, while 56 female students (32.2%) were quite good.

Discussion

The results of this study indicate that the level of knowledge, attitudes, and actions of students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra, regarding the hygiene of reproductive and vaginal discharge organs shows good results. High knowledge and positive attitudes are very important in taking appropriate actions related to reproductive health. This shows that education about reproductive health must continue to be improved to maintain women's health and prevent various complications that may occur due to vaginal discharge. Increasing awareness of the importance of maintaining the hygiene of the reproductive organs can be a significant preventive step in improving the quality of life of students.

Conclusion

This study confirms the need for deeper health education about reproductive health problems among students, so that they can be more proactive in maintaining their self-health. The right education will help create a generation of women who are healthier and more aware of their reproductive health. Therefore, it is essential to continue improving education about reproductive health to maintain women's health and prevent various complications that may occur due to vaginal discharge.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

  • Continued education: Education about reproductive health must continue to be improved to maintain women's health and prevent various complications that may occur due to vaginal discharge.
  • Awareness campaign: Increasing awareness of the importance of maintaining the hygiene of the reproductive organs can be a significant preventive step in improving the quality of life of students.
  • Health education: Deeper health education about reproductive health problems among students is essential to make them more proactive in maintaining their self-health.

Limitations

This study has several limitations, including:

  • Sample size: The sample size of this study was limited to 174 respondents, which may not be representative of the entire population.
  • Sampling method: The sampling method used in this study was proportionate stratified random sampling, which may not be the most effective method for this study.
  • Data analysis: The data analysis used in this study was limited to descriptive statistics, which may not provide a comprehensive understanding of the data.
