The Influence of Understanding the Values of Nationalism on the Political Behavior of Students of the University of North Sumatra Class 2021
Introduction
Indonesia, as a large country with a diverse array of cultures, ethnicities, and religions, requires young people who possess a high spirit of nationalism. The values of nationalism play a crucial role in shaping the political behavior of students, and it is essential to understand the impact of these values on their participation in various political aspects. This study aims to explain and describe the effect of understanding the values of nationalism on the political behavior of students of the University of North Sumatra (USU) class of 2021.
Theoretical Background
Nationalism is a complex and multifaceted concept that has been studied extensively in various fields, including politics, sociology, and education. The theory of nationalism suggests that nationalism is a sense of belonging and identity that is shared by a group of people, and it is often associated with a desire for self-determination and independence. In the context of Indonesia, nationalism is closely tied to the country's struggle for independence and its efforts to build a unified nation.
The theory of political behavior, on the other hand, suggests that political behavior is influenced by a range of factors, including individual characteristics, social context, and institutional factors. In this study, we focus on the relationship between nationalism and political behavior, and we examine how understanding the values of nationalism affects the political behavior of students.
Methodology
This study uses a quantitative method with simple linear regression analysis techniques to examine the relationship between nationalism and political behavior. Data were collected through a survey of USU students class of 2021, and the questionnaire was designed to measure the students' understanding of the values of nationalism and their political behavior.
The results of the analysis showed a strong relationship between the variable nationalism and the variable political behavior, with a correlation coefficient of 0.697. This means that the higher the student understanding of the values of nationalism, the more active they are in political behavior.
Findings
The results of the analysis also showed that the effect of independent variables (nationalism) on the dependent variable (political behavior) reached 48.6%. This shows that almost half of the political behavior of students can be explained by their understanding of nationalism. Meanwhile, the remaining 51.4%, influenced by other factors that were not examined in this study.
Discussion
The findings of this study suggest that understanding the values of nationalism has a positive impact on the political behavior of students. Students who possess a high spirit of nationalism are more likely to participate in various political aspects, including general elections, knowledge of political meaning, and the ability to criticize government policies for the progress of the nation.
The results of this study also highlight the importance of education about nationalism in the higher education curriculum. Through a deep understanding of the values of nationalism, students are expected to be able to actively contribute to politics and participate in national development.
Conclusion
In conclusion, this study provides insight into the influence of understanding the values of nationalism on the political behavior of students of the University of North Sumatra class 2021. The findings of this study suggest that education about nationalism needs to be strengthened in the higher education curriculum, especially in the University of North Sumatra.
Recommendations
Based on the findings of this study, we recommend that universities and policy makers pay more attention to aspects of nationalism education in increasing student political participation. This can be achieved through the integration of nationalism education into the higher education curriculum, and through the provision of opportunities for students to engage in various political activities.
Limitations
This study has several limitations, including the use of a quantitative method and the reliance on self-reported data. Future studies should aim to use a mixed-methods approach and collect data from multiple sources to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the relationship between nationalism and political behavior.
Future Research Directions
Future research should aim to examine the relationship between nationalism and political behavior in different contexts, including other countries and cultures. Additionally, future studies should aim to explore the impact of education about nationalism on the political behavior of students in different age groups and socio-economic backgrounds.
