The teacher is the spearhead in improving the quality of services and educational outcomes in an education unit. In East Aceh Regency, this study aims to analyze the availability of public junior high school teachers and the effect of the development of teacher professionalism on improving the quality of education.
The Role of Teachers in Improving Education Quality
Teachers have a significant impact on the quality of education, and their professionalism is a key factor in achieving this goal. The development of teacher professionalism is essential in improving the quality of education, and it is a shared responsibility between the government, teachers, and the community. By increasing teacher professionalism, it is expected to give birth to quality young generation and ready to face future challenges.
The Availability of Teachers in East Aceh Regency
The study was conducted in 44 state junior high schools in East Aceh Regency, involving 65 teachers as samples. The research variable is the development of teacher professionalism as an independent variable and improving the quality of education as a dependent variable. Data collection methods include questionnaires, documentation, interviews, and observations. Data analysis is done descriptively and uses simple linear regression analysis.
The results showed that the availability of teachers based on the minimum educational qualifications of S1 was good enough. As many as 64.8% of teachers in East Aceh Regency already have S1 education. However, in terms of quantity, there are still shortcomings of teachers. Of the total needs of 1150 teachers, only 623 people are available or 54.2%. The remaining 527 people or 45.8%, filled with honorary teachers.
The Influence of Teacher Professionalism on Education Quality
This study also shows that the development of teacher professionalism has a significant influence on improving the quality of education in East Aceh Regency, although it does not become the only factor. As many as 32% improvement in the quality of education is influenced by teacher professionalism, while 68% is influenced by other factors.
Recommendations for the East Aceh Regency Government
Based on the results of this study, there are several recommendations that need to be considered by the East Aceh Regency Government. First, it is necessary to add and appoint new teachers, as well as teacher distribution evenly to each school unit as needed. Second, the government is expected to pay more attention and allocate education funds to increase teacher professionalism.
Increasing teacher professionalism can be done through various programs, such as training, workshops, and curriculum development. This is important to improve teacher competence in teaching, managing class, and developing student character. By increasing teacher professionalism, it is expected to be able to significantly improve the quality of education in East Aceh Regency.
