Introduction

The period of infancy (0-12 months) is a critical phase in human life, marked by rapid physical and mental growth and development. Unfortunately, inadequate nutrition, improper eating patterns, and lack of exclusive breastfeeding can hinder children's development. In Langkat Regency, the exclusive breastfeeding coverage rate was only 20%, with 28% of toddlers experiencing malnutrition and 5% suffering from severe malnutrition. This study aims to reveal the influence of mother characteristics and parenting on the growth and development of infants in Pangkalan Milk District, Langkat Regency in 2008.

Methodology

This study employed a cross-sectional method involving 100 mothers who had babies as samples. Data was collected through interviews, questionnaires, and observations, then analyzed using multiple logistics regression tests. The study aimed to identify the factors that influence the growth and development of infants, including maternal education, number of children, mother's knowledge of nutrition, mother's work, type of food given, time of breastfeeding first, and time of breastfeeding food (MP-ASI) first.

Results

The results showed that factors such as maternal education, number of children, mother's knowledge of nutrition, mother's work, type of food given, time of breastfeeding first, and time of MP-ASI first had a significant effect on baby growth. The most dominant factor in influencing baby growth is the type of food given (with a beta value of 4.175). Meanwhile, factors that significantly influence the development of infants are mother's education, number of children, maternal jobs, family income, time of breastfeeding for the first time, and the time of MP-ASI for the first time. The most dominant factor that affects the development of the baby is the work of the mother (with a beta value of 3,249).
