The Influence of Team Competencies and Work on the Performance of Inpatient Nurses in the Tarutung Regional Swadana General Hospital
Introduction
The Tarutung Regional Swadana General Hospital has been implementing a nursing service system using the team's work methods since 2007. However, the inconsistent implementation of this system has led to patients feeling less satisfied with the services provided by nurses, resulting in many patients switching to other health facilities. This situation highlights the importance of nurse competencies and teamwork effectiveness in determining the quality of nursing services. Nurse competencies refer to the skills, knowledge, and attitudes that nurses possess, while teamwork effectiveness refers to the ability of nurses to work together as a team to achieve common goals.
Background
The Tarutung Regional Swadana General Hospital is a healthcare facility that provides a range of medical services to patients. The hospital has a team of 60 inpatient nurses who work together to provide care to patients. However, despite the presence of a team of skilled nurses, the hospital has been experiencing issues with patient satisfaction. This has led to a decrease in the number of patients seeking care at the hospital. Patient satisfaction is a critical factor in determining the quality of healthcare services, and it is essential for healthcare facilities to prioritize patient satisfaction.
Methodology
This study used an analytic approach and an explanatory method to analyze the effect of nurse competencies and teamwork on the performance of inpatient nurses at the Tarutung Regional Swadana General Hospital. The population studied was all 60 inpatient nurses, and the entire population was sampled. Data was obtained through a questionnaire and analyzed using a multiple regression test with a significance level of α = 0.05.
Results
The survey results show that cooperation (p = 0.038) and trust (p = 0.017) have a significant influence on the performance of inpatient nurses. This suggests that when nurses can collaborate well and trust each other, their performance in providing services will increase. On the other hand, technical competency variables (p = 0.316), behavioral competencies (p = 0.108), and cohesiveness (p = 0.875) did not show a significant effect on nurse performance.
Discussion
The results of this study suggest that teamwork is a critical factor in determining the performance of inpatient nurses. When nurses work together as a team, they are able to provide better care to patients, which leads to increased patient satisfaction. Teamwork is essential in healthcare settings, as it enables nurses to share knowledge, skills, and experiences, leading to improved patient outcomes.
Recommendations
Based on the results of this study, several recommendations can be made to the management of the Tarutung Regional Swadana Hospital to improve the performance of nurses. First, there needs to be consistency in the implementation of established team work methods. Second, management must set clear standards in employee acceptance, which includes the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed. Third, it is essential to create a work environment that supports cooperation without competition between nurses. Fourth, outbound training can be held to increase cooperation, trust, and cohesiveness in the team. Finally, the application of awards and punishment systems is also needed to motivate nurses in improving their performance.
Conclusion
The strengthening of nurses' competencies and effective team work implementation will have a positive impact on patient satisfaction and overall hospital performance. Therefore, management needs to pay attention to these factors to improve the quality of nursing services provided at the Tarutung Regional Swadana Hospital.
Limitations
This study has several limitations. First, the study was conducted at a single hospital, which may limit the generalizability of the results. Second, the study used a questionnaire to collect data, which may be subject to bias. Third, the study did not control for other factors that may influence nurse performance, such as patient load and nurse experience.
Future Research Directions
Future research should focus on exploring the relationship between nurse competencies and teamwork on patient outcomes. Additionally, research should be conducted to identify the factors that influence nurse performance and to develop strategies to improve nurse performance.
