The Influence of Predisposing and Supporting Factors on the Participation of Community Leaders in Reducing the Risk of Earthquake Natural Disasters in Lhoknga Village, Lhoknga District, Aceh Besar Regency

Introduction

Lhoknga Village, located in Lhoknga District, Aceh Besar Regency, was severely affected by the tsunami disaster in 2004, resulting in the loss of over 21,565 people in Aceh Besar, with Lhoknga District contributing the highest number of casualties. The population in Lhoknga Village after the tsunami has significantly decreased, with only around 987 people remaining from the original 3,946. This study aims to analyze the influence of predisposing factors such as knowledge and attitudes, as well as supporting factors such as the availability of human resources, facilities, infrastructure, and ease of access, on the participation of community leaders in reducing the risk of earthquake disasters.

Background

The impact of the tsunami disaster in 2004 was devastating, and the effects are still felt today. The loss of life and property has had a lasting impact on the community, and it is essential to learn from this disaster to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The participation of community leaders in reducing the risk of earthquake disasters is crucial in creating a more resilient society. However, the influence of predisposing and supporting factors on their participation is not well understood.

Methodology

This study uses an explanatory survey approach involving 35 community leaders, including Imam, Village Head, Youth Leaders, and PKK Chair in Lhoknga Village. Data was collected through questionnaire-based interviews and analyzed using multiple regression at the level of significance α = 0.05. The results of the study will provide valuable insights into the influence of predisposing and supporting factors on the participation of community leaders in reducing the risk of earthquake disasters.

Results

The results of the study showed that both predisposing factors (knowledge and attitudes) and supporting factors (human resources, facilities, infrastructure, and ease of access) have a significant influence on community leaders' participation in reducing the risk of earthquakes. The knowledge variable was found to be the most dominant factor affecting this participation, with a coefficient value (B) of 0.497. This suggests that community leaders with good knowledge and attitudes are more likely to participate in reducing the risk of earthquake disasters.

Discussion

The results of the study have significant implications for the Aceh Besar District Government. The government must take strategic steps to increase the participation of community leaders in reducing the risk of earthquake disasters. The following recommendations can be considered:

Improving Education and Awareness

The government must hold training and socialization regarding disaster risk mitigation, so that community knowledge, especially community leaders, increases. Good knowledge will encourage proactive attitudes in reducing disaster risk.

Mobilization of Resources

Inviting all levels of society in managing human resources, facilities, and infrastructure is very important. This includes involving NGOs and local communities to jointly prepare a more effective disaster response plan.

Community Participation

Supporting community participation in disaster mitigation efforts is crucial in creating a more resilient society. Involving community leaders in every step of disaster risk reduction will strengthen community involvement and ownership of the programs that are run.

Strengthening Community Involvement

Involving community leaders in every step of disaster risk reduction will strengthen community involvement and ownership of the programs that are run. This will ensure that the community is more proactive in reducing the risk of earthquake disasters.

Conclusion

The participation of community leaders in reducing the risk of earthquake disasters is crucial in creating a more resilient society. The results of this study have significant implications for the Aceh Besar District Government.
