The Influence of Parental and Peer Support on the Development of Narcotics Abuse Recovery in Adolescents at the Pamardi Putra Insyaf North Sumatra Social Institution
Introduction
Drug abuse is a serious problem that affects not only individuals but also their families and society as a whole. In North Sumatra, the prevalence of drug abuse among students reached 4.7% in 2009, highlighting the need for effective rehabilitation programs. The Pamardi Putra Social Institution of Insyaf North Sumatra is one such rehabilitation site for teenagers who experience drug dependence. This study aims to investigate the influence of parental and peer support on the development of narcotics abuse recovery in adolescents at the Pamardi Putra Insyaf Social Institution in North Sumatra.
Background
The prevalence of drug abuse among students in North Sumatra is a concern that requires immediate attention. In 2011, there were 104 clients who underwent rehabilitation at the orphanage, with 44 people in the integrated class (still dependency) and 60 people in conventional classes (no longer dependence). The rehabilitation process is crucial in helping adolescents overcome drug dependence, and the support of parents and peers plays a significant role in this process.
Methodology
This study used a survey method with an explanatory approach to analyze the influence of parental and peer support on the development of narcotics abuse recovery in adolescents. The population of the study consisted of 60 people, and a sample of 60 people was taken using the total sampling method. Data was collected through a questionnaire from January to December 2011 and analyzed using multiple logistics regression tests at α = 0.05.
Results
The results of the study showed that the support of parents and peers significantly influenced the development of narcotics abuse recovery in adolescents. However, parents' support is the most dominant variable and significantly influences the recovery process. This suggests that the role of parents is crucial in supporting the process of recovery of adolescents who experience drug dependence.
Discussion
The findings of this study have several implications for the rehabilitation process at the Pamardi Putra Insyaf North Sumatra Social Institution. Firstly, the institution needs to develop policies, programs, and activities that involve peers and family, especially parents, in the rehabilitation process. Secondly, the orphanage needs to work more actively in providing support and counseling to rehabilitation patients. Thirdly, further research can be done on parents who have drug addicts to see their reactions and acceptance of children's dependence, as well as actions and efforts taken to help their children recover from drug abuse.
Conclusion
This study provides important evidence of the vital role of family and peer support in supporting the process of recovery of adolescents who experience drug dependence. The findings of this study highlight the need for rehabilitation efforts to focus not only on individuals but also on the social environment that supports them in undergoing the recovery process. By involving parents and peers in the rehabilitation process, the Pamardi Putra Insyaf North Sumatra Social Institution can provide more effective support to adolescents who experience drug dependence.
