Introduction
The success of health service development in Indonesia heavily relies on the active participation of the community and the private sector in implementing public health efforts. One crucial aspect of this is the existence of competent and active posyandu cadres. However, the problem faced is the low motivation and knowledge of cadres, leading to their inactiveness in running health programs. This study aims to explain the effect of motivation and knowledge on the activity of posyandu cadres in the working area of the Bandar Khalipah Puskesmas Deli Serdang Regency in 2016.
Background
The Bandar Khalipah Health Center has 7 villages and 69 posyandu, with a total of 301 cadres. Unfortunately, only 170 cadres or around 56.48% were active, while 131 other cadres or 43.52% were classified as inactive. The standard achievement of the expected target of each posyandu per year is 95%. This study aims to investigate the effect of motivation and knowledge on the activity of posyandu cadres.
Methodology
The methodology used in this study was the Explanatory Research, where the data was taken from all Posyandu cadres at the Bandar Khalipah Health Center using the Purposive Sampling method. Data collection was carried out through a questionnaire and analyzed using multiple linear regression tests.
Results
The results showed that there was a significant influence between motivation and knowledge on the activity of cadres, especially on the award variable (p = 0.039) and responsibility (p = 0.034). On the other hand, the work variable itself (p = 0.764), interpersonal relationship (p = 0.411), and incentives (p = 0.754) did not show significant effects.
Discussion
Motivation is the most influential factor on the activity of Posyandu cadres. The award given to cadres, both in material form and recognition, can increase their confidence and commitment to the task. Clear responsibility also plays an important role, because cadres who feel they have responsibilities towards public health tend to be more active in running programs.
Meanwhile, other variables such as interpersonal relationships and incentives do not seem to have a significant effect. This could be caused by a lack of understanding cadres about the importance of collaboration in the team, as well as dissatisfaction with the form of incentives provided. As a step to improve, the government and health workers need to provide more tangible support, including periodic training that not only improves skills but also build relations between cadres.
Conclusion
Seeing the results of this study, it is recommended that there is a systematic effort in providing better training and appreciation to cadres. Support from the village government and health workers is needed to create a conducive environment for cadres so that they are more motivated and active in implementing the posyandu program. Thus, the hope to achieve the target of achieving each ideal posyandu can be realized, and the community can feel the maximum benefits of the health efforts made.
Recommendations
By formulating the right strategy in increasing the motivation and knowledge of cadres, it is hoped that their activeness can increase, which in turn will have a positive impact on overall public health. The government and health workers need to provide more tangible support, including periodic training that not only improves skills but also build relations between cadres.
Limitations
This study has some limitations. The data was collected from a specific area, and the sample size was relatively small. Future studies should aim to collect data from a larger sample size and from different areas to increase the generalizability of the findings.
