The Influence of Family Planning Counseling on the Knowledge and Intention of the Couple of Childbearing Age Regarding IUD Contraception in the Working Area of the Blang Mancung Health Center, Central Aceh Regency
Introduction
Family planning is a crucial aspect of reproductive health, and counseling plays a vital role in educating individuals about various contraceptive methods. Intrauterine Device (IUD) contraception is a long-term, highly effective method with a very low failure rate. However, its adoption in the working area of the Blang Mancung Health Center, Central Aceh Regency, is relatively low. This article aims to explore the effect of family planning counseling on the knowledge and intention of fertile age couples (PUS) regarding IUD contraception.
The Importance of IUD Contraception
IUD contraception is a popular choice among women due to its high effectiveness and long-term benefits. With a failure rate of only 0.1-1 pregnancy per 100 women, IUDs are considered a reliable method of contraception. Despite these advantages, the use of IUD contraception in the working area of the Blang Mancung Health Center is still relatively low. Of the total 1,157 family planning (KB) acceptors in this region, only about 1% chose the IUD as a method of contraception. This is influenced by the lack of knowledge and intentions of fertile age couples (PUS) to use an IUD, which is mostly caused by the less effective counseling provided by health workers.
Research Purpose and Methodology
This study aims to analyze the effect of family planning counseling on PUS knowledge and intentions regarding IUD contraception. The research method used is quantitative with a quasi-experimental approach. The research sample consisted of 96 people, of which 48 people joined in the treatment group and 48 others in the control group. Sampling was carried out by purposive sampling technique, and data was collected through a questionnaire.
Data Analysis and Results
The data collected was analyzed using univariate and bivariate techniques, followed by a t-test with a degree of confidence of 95%. The results of the analysis show that family planning counseling has a significant effect on PUS knowledge of the IUD contraceptive method (p = 0.001 <0.05). In addition, counseling also has a positive effect on the intention of Pus to use an IUD (p = 0.001 <0.05).
Implications and Recommendations
Based on the results of the study, it is recommended that the National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) and Blang Mancung Health Center can cooperate with health education institutions to increase the dissemination of information about the IUD. In addition, counseling should be carried out by health workers who have skills in communication, information, and education (IEC). This is important so that people get a better understanding of the benefits and use of IUDs as an effective method of contraception.
The Role of Effective Counseling
Effective counseling is crucial in increasing the knowledge and intention of fertile age couples (PUS) to use IUD contraception. Health workers should be trained to provide high-quality counseling that addresses the needs and concerns of individuals. This can be achieved by using a patient-centered approach, which focuses on the individual's values, preferences, and needs.
Increasing the Scope of Use of IUD Contraception
By making efforts to increase knowledge and intention through effective counseling, it is expected to increase the scope of use of IUD contraception among fertile age couples, so as to contribute to birth control and improve reproductive health in the community. This can be achieved by:
- Increasing the dissemination of information about the IUD through health education institutions and community-based programs.
- Providing high-quality counseling that addresses the needs and concerns of individuals.
- Training health workers to provide effective counseling that focuses on the individual's values, preferences, and needs.
Conclusion
In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of effective counseling in increasing the knowledge and intention of fertile age couples (PUS) to use IUD contraception. The results of the study show that family planning counseling has a significant effect on PUS knowledge of the IUD contraceptive method and a positive effect on the intention of Pus to use an IUD. Therefore, it is recommended that the National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) and Blang Mancung Health Center can cooperate with health education institutions to increase the dissemination of information about the IUD and provide high-quality counseling that addresses the needs and concerns of individuals.
Recommendations for Future Research
Future research should focus on:
- Evaluating the effectiveness of different counseling approaches in increasing the knowledge and intention of fertile age couples (PUS) to use IUD contraception.
- Investigating the role of community-based programs in increasing the dissemination of information about the IUD.
- Developing and implementing effective strategies to increase the scope of use of IUD contraception among fertile age couples.
Limitations of the Study
This study has several limitations, including:
- The sample size was relatively small, which may limit the generalizability of the results.
- The study only focused on fertile age couples (PUS) and did not include other groups, such as adolescents and older adults.
- The study only evaluated the effect of family planning counseling on knowledge and intention and did not investigate other outcomes, such as contraceptive use and reproductive health outcomes.
Future Directions
Future research should aim to address these limitations and explore new avenues for increasing the knowledge and intention of fertile age couples (PUS) to use IUD contraception. This can be achieved by:
- Conducting larger-scale studies that include a more diverse sample of participants.
- Investigating the role of different counseling approaches and community-based programs in increasing the dissemination of information about the IUD.
- Developing and implementing effective strategies to increase the scope of use of IUD contraception among fertile age couples.
