The Influence of Competence and Motivation on Business Success in Orange Farmers in Karo District, Berastagi District
Introduction
The success of a business in the agricultural sector, particularly in orange farming, is influenced by various factors. Two key factors that have been widely studied are competence and motivation. Competence refers to the knowledge, skills, and experience possessed by farmers, while motivation is related to internal and external encouragement that affects their morale. This study aims to analyze the effect of competence and motivation on business success in orange farmers in Berastagi District, Karo Regency.
Background of the Study
The agricultural sector in Karo Regency is one of the mainstay sectors of the regional economy. Orange farming is a significant contributor to the regional economy, with many farmers relying on this crop as their primary source of income. However, the success of orange farming is influenced by various factors, including competence and motivation. Farmers who possess good knowledge and skills in orange cultivation techniques, pest control, and plant maintenance tend to be more successful in managing their business. Similarly, farmers who have high motivation, both in terms of the desire to increase production and in finding new information, will be more proactive in taking the steps needed to improve business results.
Research Methodology
This study is included in the associative category, which focuses on the analysis of the relationship between one variable and another variable. The research population consisted of 35 orange farmers in Berastagi District. The sampling technique used is a saturation method, where the entire population is used as research respondents. Primary data are obtained through the distribution of questionnaires and direct interviews with farmers, while secondary data are taken from relevant literature studies.
Data Analysis
Data analysis is carried out using descriptive analysis techniques and multiple linear regression analysis. The results showed that simultaneously, competence and motivation had a positive and significant effect on the success of the business of orange farmers. The coefficient of determination obtained, namely Adjusted R Square of 0.836, shows that 83.6% of the business success variables can be explained by competence and motivation. Meanwhile, the remaining 16.4% is influenced by other factors that are not included in this study.
The Role of Competence in Business Success
From the research results, it can be concluded that the competencies possessed by orange farmers greatly affect their ability to run a business. Farmers who have good knowledge and skills in orange cultivation techniques, pest control, and plant maintenance tend to be more successful in managing their business. This is because they are able to apply their knowledge and skills effectively, resulting in higher yields and better quality produce.
The Role of Motivation in Business Success
Motivation is also an important factor that supports success. Farmers who have high motivation, both in terms of the desire to increase production and in finding new information, will be more proactive in taking the steps needed to improve business results. This is because they are driven by a desire to succeed and are willing to take risks to achieve their goals.
The External Environment and Business Success
The success of the business of orange farmers does not only depend on personal competencies and motivation. The external environment also plays a role, such as support from the government, access to market information, and the existence of a supporting farmer community. Therefore, it is very important for stakeholders to create training programs that can improve farmers' competencies and provide incentives to motivate them.
