Introduction

Entrepreneurship is a vital aspect of economic growth and development, and it is essential to identify the factors that influence entrepreneurial intentions among students. Adversity Quotient (AQ) and social support are two critical variables that can impact an individual's ability to start and run a business. This study aims to examine the effect of adversity quotient and social support on entrepreneurial intentions among students of the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of North Sumatra (USU FEB).

Understanding Adversity Quotient (AQ)

Adversity Quotient (AQ) is a measure of an individual's ability to survive and overcome various challenges and difficulties. It can be interpreted as the ability to change mindset and action when faced with difficult situations. Individuals with high AQ tend to have a more resilient attitude towards challenges, which is essential for entrepreneurship. They are able to adapt to new situations, think critically, and make informed decisions.

The Role of Social Support

Social support plays a crucial role in entrepreneurship. A supportive environment can encourage individuals to take brave steps in entrepreneurship. Support from friends, family, or mentors can help individuals overcome fear and worries that often arise when trying to start a new business. A positive social environment can strengthen an individual's beliefs and create networks that can help when they face various challenges in business.

Methodology

This study involved 152 students from the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of North Sumatra (USU FEB) in 2013. Data analysis was carried out using multiple linear regression techniques. The results of the analysis show that the adjusted R Square value reached 0.841, which means that 84.1% of student entrepreneurship intentions can be explained by the Adversity Quotient variable and social support.

Results

The simultaneous test results show that the Fcount value (399,653) is greater than Ftable (3.06) with a very low significance level (0.0000 <0.05). This shows that both adversity quotient and social support together have a positive influence on entrepreneurship intentions. Partial test analysis shows that for the Adversity Quotient variable, the tcount value (3,466) is greater than the ttable (1,655). This indicates that Adversity Quotient has a significant positive influence on entrepreneurial intentions. Likewise, for the variable social support, the value of tcount (9,175) is also much higher than the ttable (1,655), which confirms that social support also has a positive and significant influence on entrepreneurial intensity.

Further Analysis

This research highlights the importance of adversity quotient and social support in preparing students to enter the world of entrepreneurship. Students with high adversity quotient tend to have a more resilient attitude towards the challenges they might encounter while running a business. They are able to change the way of thinking and actions to deal with difficulties, which are very necessary qualities in the world of entrepreneurship that are full of risk and uncertainty.

Social support also plays a crucial role. In a supportive environment, students will be more confident to take brave steps in entrepreneurship. Support from friends, family, or mentors can encourage individuals to overcome the fear and worries that often arise when trying to start a new business. A positive social environment will strengthen their beliefs and create networks that can help when they face various challenges in business.

Conclusion

From the results of this study, it can be concluded that the two variables - Adversity Quotient and social support - contributed significantly to the entrepreneurial intentions of the students of the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of North Sumatra. This shows that the development of skills dealing with difficulties and creating a network of social support can be an important focus in the entrepreneurship education program. By increasing AQ and providing adequate social support, educational institutions can be better prepared in facilitating students to become successful entrepreneurs in the future.
