The Growth Response of Sugar Cane (Saccharum officinarum L.) at Various Ages of Planting Material and Compassional Concentration

Introduction

Sugar cane is one of the most important commodities in the agricultural industry, particularly in sugar production. The growth and development of sugar cane are influenced by various factors, including the age of the planting material and the concentration of growth regulators. This study aims to determine the response of sugar cane bud set to the concentration of Indole Butyric Acid (IBA) applied at various ages of planting material. The study was conducted on the land of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra (USU) from May to August.

Methodology

The method used in this study is a randomized factorial group design with two factors, namely the age of the planting material (6, 7, and 8 months) and the concentration of compassion (100, 200, and 300 ppm). A number of parameters were considered to assess sugar cane growth, including the percentage of growing seeds, germination rates, seed length, number of leaves, seed diameter, number of puppies, total leaves, root volume, root length, and dry weight of the canopy.

Results

The results of the study show that the germination rate is significantly influenced by the age of the planting material and the concentration of the growth regulators used. Nevertheless, the interaction between the age of the planting material and the concentration of compassion does not have a significant effect on all observed parameters.

On the other hand, although higher compassion concentration tends to increase growth, the effect must be carefully considered. Concentrations that are too high can cause negative effects, such as irregular growth or even damage to plants. Therefore, the selection of the exact concentration of compassion is very important to achieve optimal growth.

Although the interaction between the age of the planting material and the concentration of compassion does not show a significant effect, it is still important to conduct further research. This study can be explored deeper by considering other factors, such as soil conditions, climate, and maintenance techniques used.
