The Function of Reference Services to the Information Needs of Libraries in the UPT of the Bung Hatta Bukittinggi Proclamator Library
Introduction
The Bung Hatta Proclamator Library, located in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, plays a vital role in providing reference services for its users. As a crucial component of the library's operations, reference services aim to meet the information needs of its patrons. This study aims to evaluate the extent to which the UPT Bung Hatta Proclamator Library carries out its referral services functions, which include five indicators: supervisory functions, information functions, guidance functions, instructions/instructions, and bibliographic functions.
Methodology
The research method used in this study is descriptive, with a research population consisting of 876 active users, including high school students, students, and the general public. A sample of 90 people was taken through incidental sampling techniques, with questionnaire instruments used for data collection. The data analysis involved the use of frequency distribution tables and percentages to present the research results.
Results
The results of the analysis show that overall, the reference service function at the UPT of the Bung Hatta Proclamator Library received a good assessment. However, there are some parts of the indicators that show services that are still unsatisfactory. For example, although the information function is carried out well, there are deficiencies in terms of supervision and guidance that can affect user satisfaction.
Discussion
The reference service provided by the Bung Hatta Proclamator Library UPT is good enough and satisfying, but to improve the quality of the service, there are several aspects that need to be improved. Improving training for library staff in providing appropriate information and guidance can be the first step to optimize the reference service function. In addition, the improvement of facilities and resources that support the supervision process and instructions can also assist users in meeting their information needs more optimally.
Conclusion
The importance of quality reference services not only has an impact on user satisfaction, but also on the quality of information obtained. When users are satisfied with the services provided, they tend to be more active in using the library and utilizing various sources of information available.
