Introduction
Water management is a crucial aspect of plant irrigation, and its level of application can significantly impact the growth and productivity of crops. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of water giving levels through drop fertigation on cocopeat planting media on the growth of cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus L.). The parameters analyzed in this study include cocopeate mass density, cocopeate particle density, porosity, organic matter, evapotranspiration, uniformity of water use, water use efficiency, water productivity, and weight and number of cucumbers produced.
Materials and Methods
The study was conducted using cocopeat as the planting media, which is a popular choice for its good aeration and water retention capabilities. The cocopeat was analyzed for its mass density, particle density, porosity, and organic matter content. The evapotranspiration rate was measured using a lysimeter, while the uniformity of water use and water use efficiency were calculated using the water balance equation. The weight and number of cucumbers produced were recorded at the end of the experiment.
Results
The results of this study showed that the mass density of the cocopeate was 0.08 g/cm³, while the cocopeate particle density reached 0.17 g/cm³. The porosity of this planting media was recorded at 54%, and the content of organic matter reached 6.37%. Evapotranspiration that occurs ranges from 1.2 to 1.6 mm/day, with uniformity of water use reaching a height figure of 98.21%. The efficiency of water use is also very good, namely 99.61%, and water productivity reaches 1263.0 kg/m³. In terms of yield, the weight of cucumbers ranges from 280.6 g to 320.4 g, with the number of fruits produced per plant around 1 to 2 pieces in one polybag.
