Soursop (Annona Muricata Linn.) is a popular tropical fruit plant known for its unique flavor and high nutritional content. However, the main challenge in soursop cultivation is the viability or growth power of the seeds. This study aims to identify the effect of scarification and soaking using natural growth regulators on soursop seed viability. The study was conducted at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra (USU) from July to September 2018 using a complete random design.
Soursop is a tropical fruit plant that requires optimal growing conditions to thrive. The seeds of the soursop plant are sensitive to environmental factors, which can affect their viability. Scarification and soaking are two methods that can be used to improve seed viability. Scarification involves breaking the outer layer of the seed to facilitate water and nutrient absorption, while soaking involves immersing the seed in a solution that contains natural growth regulators.
The research method used in this study is crucial in determining valid results. In this study, the scarification treatment was carried out by breaking the outer layer of the seed to facilitate water and nutrient absorption. The soaking treatment involved immersing the seed in a solution that contained natural growth regulators, such as young coconut water and shallot extract. Young coconut water is rich in nutrients and growing hormones that can stimulate growth, while onion extracts are known to have antibacterial and anti-fungal substances that can protect seeds from pathogenic attacks.
The results of this study showed that the combination of scarification and soaking treatment with young coconut water and onion extracts gave significant results in increasing plant height, number of leaves, and vigor index. This shows that the treatment is very effective in increasing soursop seed viability. Seeds that are experiencing scarification tend to be faster than those who are not, and the addition of immersion with natural growth regulators accelerates the process.
High seed viability is very important in agriculture, especially for soursop plants that require optimal growing conditions. By utilizing the appropriate scarification and soaking methods, farmers can improve yields and the quality of soursop plants. This is not only profitable in terms of economic but also supports agricultural sustainability in the tropics.
From this study, it can be concluded that the treatment of scarification and soaking using natural growth regulators, especially young coconut water and onion extracts, had a positive impact on soursop seed viability. The use of this method can be an effective solution for farmers to increase soursop productivity. For further research, it is expected to explore more natural growth regulators and other treatments that can further improve yields.
