The Effect of Occupational Safety and Health on the Productivity of PT. X 2015

Introduction

The importance of implementing Occupational Safety and Health (K3) programs in the company cannot be denied. A safe, healthy, and pollution-free work environment can minimize the risk of accidents and occupational diseases, which in turn have a positive impact on employee productivity. This study examines the effect of K3 on worker productivity at PT. X in 2015.

Background

Occupational Safety and Health (K3) is a crucial aspect of any organization, as it directly affects the well-being and productivity of its employees. A safe and healthy work environment is essential for employees to perform their duties efficiently and effectively. However, many organizations still neglect the importance of K3, which can lead to accidents, occupational diseases, and decreased productivity.

Methodology

This study was conducted using the analytic method with a * cross-sectional * approach in March 2015. The research population consisted of all palm oil harvesters at PT. X, totaling 206 people. From this population, 60 people were chosen as samples. Data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to examine the relationship between the latent variable and its indicators (measurement models) and the relationship between latent variables (structural models).

Results

The results of this study showed that occupational safety and health had a positive influence on worker productivity. The study found that:

Work Safety has a Positive Influence on Productivity

Work safety is a critical aspect of K3, and its implementation can have a significant impact on employee productivity. The study found that work safety has a positive influence on productivity with a path coefficient value of 0.31. Work safety is formed by several indicators, namely:

  • Safety Regulations: The implementation of good safety regulations can minimize the risk of accidents and occupational diseases.
  • Support and Communication: Effective communication and support from management and colleagues can create a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Personal Protective Equipment: The provision of personal protective equipment can protect employees from harm and reduce the risk of accidents.
  • Training: Regular training and education can equip employees with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their duties safely and effectively.

Occupational Health also has a Positive Influence on Productivity

Occupational health is another critical aspect of K3, and its implementation can have a significant impact on employee productivity. The study found that occupational health has a positive influence on productivity with a path coefficient value of 0.46. Occupational health is formed by construct indicators of:

  • Physical Conditions: The physical condition of workers plays an important role in their productivity.
  • Health Checks: Regular health checks can identify potential health problems and prevent occupational diseases.
  • Health Service Facilities: The availability of adequate health facilities and services can provide employees with access to medical care and support.

Conclusion

Overall, occupational safety and health is able to explain 52% of variations in the productivity of workers at PT. X. The results of this study highlight the importance of implementing K3 programs in the company. It is recommended that PT. X:

  • Improve Work Safety Communication Skills: Improve communication skills to create a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Create New Variations in Communicating OHS Programs: Develop new and innovative ways to communicate OHS programs to employees.
  • Improve Physical Health of Workers: Provide adequate health facilities and services to improve the physical health of workers.

By implementing these recommendations, PT. X can improve worker productivity and achieve overall company goals.

Recommendations

Based on the results of this study, the following recommendations are made:

  • Improve Work Safety Communication Skills: Improve communication skills to create a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Create New Variations in Communicating OHS Programs: Develop new and innovative ways to communicate OHS programs to employees.
  • Improve Physical Health of Workers: Provide adequate health facilities and services to improve the physical health of workers.

By implementing these recommendations, PT. X can improve worker productivity and achieve overall company goals.

Limitations

This study has several limitations, including:

  • Sample Size: The sample size was limited to 60 people, which may not be representative of the entire population.
  • Data Collection: The data was collected using a cross-sectional approach, which may not capture the dynamic nature of K3 programs.
  • Measurement Tools: The measurement tools used in this study may not be sensitive enough to capture the nuances of K3 programs.

Future Research Directions

Future research should focus on:

  • Longitudinal Studies: Conduct longitudinal studies to capture the dynamic nature of K3 programs.
  • Large Sample Size: Conduct studies with a larger sample size to increase the generalizability of the findings.
  • Multi-Method Approach: Use a multi-method approach to collect data, including surveys, interviews, and observations.

By addressing these limitations and future research directions, researchers can gain a deeper understanding of the impact of K3 programs on worker productivity and develop more effective strategies to improve K3 programs in organizations.
