The Effect of Muara Baimbai Multipurpose Cooperatives (KSU) on the Development of Mangrove Businesses by Fishermen Wives in Sei Nagalawan Village, Serdang Bedagai Regency

Introduction

Cooperatives have long been recognized as a vital component of community development, providing a platform for individuals to come together and achieve common economic goals. In Indonesia, the existence of cooperatives such as the Muara Baimbai Multipurpose Cooperative (KSU) serves as a testament to the country's commitment to economic democracy. This study aims to explore the impact of KSU Muara Baimbai on the development of mangrove businesses carried out by fishermen wives in Sei Nagalawan Village, Serdang Bedagai Regency.

The Role of Cooperatives in Community Development

Cooperatives are a form of business entity that operates on the principles of mutual aid and solidarity. By pooling their resources and expertise, members of a cooperative can achieve economic goals that would be impossible for them to attain individually. In the context of Indonesia, cooperatives have played a crucial role in promoting economic development, particularly in rural areas where access to resources and markets can be limited.

The Muara Baimbai Multipurpose Cooperative (KSU)

The Muara Baimbai Multipurpose Cooperative (KSU) is a prime example of a cooperative that has made a significant impact on the lives of its members. By providing a platform for fishermen wives to develop their mangrove businesses, KSU has helped to improve the economic well-being of the community. The cooperative's success can be attributed to its ability to provide support and resources to its members, enabling them to overcome the challenges associated with starting and running a business.

Methodology

This study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis methods. The research location was KSU Muara Baimbai, with the research subject consisting of 27 fishermen wives who run the business and become members of the cooperative. The methodology used in this study includes literature studies, field observations, and distribution of questionnaires for data collection. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS software, and the results were presented in quantitative form.

Results

The data processing results show that the value of A is 70.891 and B is 0.601, which has a positive sign. This means that every increase in variable X (the influence of the Multipurpose Cooperative) will have an impact on increasing the variable Y (development of mangrove business) by 0.601. This finding shows that KSU Muara Baimbai plays an important role in supporting and developing mangrove businesses run by fishing wives.

Discussion

Further analysis shows that the success of the mangrove business not only depends on the support of the cooperative, but also to the creativity and innovation applied by cooperative members. Therefore, the authors recommend that fishing wives establish cooperation with cooperatives in other villages to create better synergy, as well as innovate in products and marketing to expand market reach.

Conclusion

In a broader context, the results of this study confirm the importance of the role of cooperatives in improving the economy of the community, especially for vulnerable groups such as fishermen's wives. Thus, the existence of KSU Muara Baimbai is not just a gathering place, but also becomes an agent of change that encourages local economic progress and empowering the community through sustainable efforts.

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

  • Establishing cooperation with other cooperatives: Fishing wives are encouraged to establish cooperation with cooperatives in other villages to create better synergy and expand market reach.
  • Innovating products and marketing: Cooperative members are encouraged to innovate in products and marketing to expand market reach and improve the competitiveness of their businesses.

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations that should be acknowledged. Firstly, the study was conducted in a specific context, and the findings may not be generalizable to other contexts. Secondly, the study relied on a small sample size, which may limit the reliability of the findings. Finally, the study did not explore the impact of KSU Muara Baimbai on the broader community, which may be an area for future research.

Future Research Directions

This study has several implications for future research. Firstly, the study highlights the importance of cooperatives in promoting economic development, particularly in rural areas. Secondly, the study shows that the success of a cooperative depends not only on the support of the cooperative, but also on the creativity and innovation applied by cooperative members. Finally, the study suggests that further research is needed to explore the impact of KSU Muara Baimbai on the broader community.

Conclusion
