The Effect of Soaking Pandan Extract Solution (Pandanus Amaryllifolius Roxb.) As a Cleanser on the Color Stability of the Base of the Thermoplastic Nylon Denture Base Ingredients

Introduction

Artificial dentures play a vital role in restoring the function of mastication and aesthetics for individuals who experience teeth loss. The base of the denture can be made of various materials, both metal and non-logam. Lately, thermoplastic nylon has become an interesting choice as a base of denture due to its good aesthetic advantage and hypoallergenic nature. However, thermoplastic nylon also has weaknesses, such as difficulties in the process of repair and polishing, which can cause the accumulation of microbial contamination. Therefore, cleaning of artificial dentures every day becomes very important, which can be done through mechanical, chemical, or combination methods of the two.

The Importance of Cleaning Artificial Dentures

Cleaning artificial dentures is crucial to prevent the accumulation of microbial contamination, which can lead to various health problems. The cleaning process can be done through mechanical, chemical, or combination methods of the two. However, the use of chemical cleaning agents can affect the color stability of the denture. Therefore, it is essential to explore alternative cleaning agents that are not only effective but also safe for maintaining the color stability of the denture.

The Potential of Pandan Extract Solution as a Cleanser

Pandan extract solution (Pandanus Amaryllifolius Roxb.) has been shown to have potential as a cleanser for artificial dentures. The solution has been used in various studies to clean and disinfect surfaces. However, its use as a cleanser for artificial dentures needs to be explored further due to its potential effects on the color stability of the denture. This study aims to examine the effect of immersion of the thermoplastic nylon artificial dentures in the solution of fragrant pandanus extract at various concentrations on color stability.

Research Design and Methodology

This study was conducted using an experimental design in the laboratory with a post-test only control group design. The research sample consisted of 24 thermoplastic nylon cylinders, each measuring 20 x 3 mm, according to the standard International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 1567. The samples were divided into four groups: one group used distilled water, and three other groups used pandanus extract solutions at concentrations of 25%, 50%, and 75%. After immersion for 61 hours, the sample color stability was measured using a colorimeter.

Results

The results of the analysis using the One-way ANOVA test showed a significant effect of immersion in the solution of the fragrance pandanus extract on the color stability of the denture. The LSD further test confirmed that there were significant differences between the pandan wangi extract solution group and the aquades group. Overall, fragrant pandanus extract solutions at a concentration of 25%, 50%, and 75% have been proven to affect color stability, but only a concentration of 25% remains in the range of clinically acceptable values (ΔE <3.5). Thus, a 25% fragrant pandanus extract solution can be considered as an effective alternative cleanser for artificial dentures.

Conclusion

This study shows that cleaning of artificial dentures with fragrant pandanus extract solutions is not only effective but also safe for maintaining the color stability of denture. This can provide solutions for denture patients who are looking for effective alternative cleaning agents without sacrificing their aesthetic. Therefore, it is essential to continue to explore the use of natural ingredients in dental health care, which is not only effective but also more environmentally friendly and safe for health.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations can be made:

  1. Further research: Further research is needed to explore the use of pandan extract solution as a cleanser for artificial dentures in various concentrations and for different types of denture materials.

  3. Limited duration: The study only examined the effect of pandan extract solution on color stability for 61 hours, which may not be representative of the long-term effects of using the solution as a cleanser.

Future Directions

This study provides a foundation for further research on the use of pandan extract solution as a cleanser for artificial dentures. Future studies should aim to:

  1. Explore the use of pandan extract solution in different concentrations: Further research should be conducted to explore the use of pandan extract solution in different concentrations and for different types of denture materials.
  2. Evaluate the effectiveness and safety of pandan extract solution: Clinical trials should be conducted to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of pandan extract solution as a cleanser for artificial dentures in real-world settings.
  3. Develop new products: New products that incorporate pandan extract solution as a cleanser for artificial dentures should be developed and marketed to denture patients.
  4. Educate and raise awareness: Education and awareness programs should be conducted to inform denture patients about the benefits and risks of using pandan extract solution as a cleanser for artificial dentures.
