The Effect of Differences in the Level of Soil Volume Density and the Administration of Blotong on the Physical Properties of Ultisol Soils and the Growth of Peanut Plants (Arachis hypogaea L.)
Introduction
Increasing ultisol soil productivity is a serious challenge for farmers. Ultisol soil is known for its low fertility level and solid soil structure, limiting plant growth. Research conducted by Cendro Manik from the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, tested the effectiveness of the use of soil volume density and giving blotong in improving the quality of ultisol soils and the growth of peanut plants (Arachis hypogaea L.). This study aims to investigate the effect of differences in the level of soil volume density and the administration of blotong on the physical properties of ultisol soils and the growth of peanut plants.
Methodology
This study uses a factorial random group design (shelf) with two main factors: the level of soil volume density and giving blotong. There are four levels of soil volume density that is 1.0 g/cm³, 1.3 g/cm³, 1.6 g/cm³, and 1.9 g/cm³. Giving blotong is tested in three doses: 0 tons/ha, 30 tons/ha, and 60 tons/ha. The experiment was conducted in a controlled environment, and the data was collected and analyzed using statistical methods.
Results
The results showed that manipulation of soil volume density has a significant influence on the physical properties of the soil. Increased soil volume density causes an increase in soil contents and soil penetration, while soil permeability, total soil pore space, and plant height decreases. However, the density of soil volume does not have a significant effect on the content of C-organic soil.
Giving blotong, on the other hand, shows a significant positive effect on increasing soil C-organic content, soil permeability, total soil pore space, and plant height. Conversely, giving blotong results in decreased weight of soil contents and soil penetration. The interaction between the density of soil volume and the administration of blotong does not show a significant effect on all observed parameters.
Discussion
The results of this study indicate that the application of appropriate strategies in managing soil volume density and the use of blotong can be a key in improving the quality of ultisol soils. Increasing the density of soil volume, although it has a positive impact on some of the physical properties of the soil, needs to be balanced with appropriate soil management strategies so as not to have a negative impact on plant growth.
Giving blotong as organic fertilizer has great potential in improving soil quality and supporting plant growth. Blotong can improve soil structure, increase aeration and drainage, and provide nutrients for plants. This study provides important information for farmers and researchers in an effort to improve the quality of ultisol land. The use of blotong and manipulation of soil volume density, if done appropriately, can be an effective approach in increasing ultisol soil productivity and supporting the growth of peanut plants.
Conclusion
This study provides valuable insights into the effect of differences in the level of soil volume density and the administration of blotong on the physical properties of ultisol soils and the growth of peanut plants. The results of this study indicate that the application of appropriate strategies in managing soil volume density and the use of blotong can be a key in improving the quality of ultisol soils. Further research is needed to understand more complex interactions between soil volume density, giving blotong, and growth of peanut plants. It is also important to consider other factors that can affect plant growth such as peanut varieties, water availability, and climate conditions.
Recommendations
Based on the results of this study, the following recommendations are made:
- Farmers and researchers should consider the use of blotong as an organic fertilizer to improve soil quality and support plant growth.
- The density of soil volume should be managed appropriately to balance the positive impact on some physical properties of the soil with the negative impact on plant growth.
- Further research is needed to understand more complex interactions between soil volume density, giving blotong, and growth of peanut plants.
- Other factors that can affect plant growth such as peanut varieties, water availability, and climate conditions should be considered in future research.
Limitations
This study has several limitations that should be considered when interpreting the results. The experiment was conducted in a controlled environment, and the data was collected and analyzed using statistical methods. However, the results may not be generalizable to other environments and conditions. Additionally, the study only investigated the effect of differences in the level of soil volume density and the administration of blotong on the physical properties of ultisol soils and the growth of peanut plants, and did not consider other factors that can affect plant growth.
Future Research Directions
Future research should aim to investigate the complex interactions between soil volume density, giving blotong, and growth of peanut plants. Additionally, other factors that can affect plant growth such as peanut varieties, water availability, and climate conditions should be considered in future research. The use of blotong and manipulation of soil volume density, if done appropriately, can be an effective approach in increasing ultisol soil productivity and supporting the growth of peanut plants.
