Introduction
The quality of education is heavily dependent on the competence of teachers. Competent teachers not only possess adequate knowledge and skills but are also able to apply effective teaching methods, creating a better learning environment and supporting student development. In this context, teacher job satisfaction is a crucial factor, as satisfied teachers tend to be more motivated and dedicated in carrying out their duties. This study aims to identify the effect of competence on the job satisfaction of teachers in MAN 1 Medan, with work motivation as an intervening variable.

Research has shown that competent teachers are more effective in teaching and have a positive impact on student learning outcomes. However, teacher competence is not the only factor that affects teacher job satisfaction. Work motivation also plays a significant role in determining teacher job satisfaction. When teachers feel competent, they are more confident in carrying out teaching tasks, which in turn increases job satisfaction.

The data were analyzed using path analysis techniques to examine the relationship between teacher competence, work motivation, and job satisfaction.
Results
The results of this study showed that teacher competence has a significant effect on job satisfaction. That is, the higher the competence of the teacher, the more job satisfaction will increase. In addition, this study also found that work motivation functions as a positive and significant mediator in the relationship between competence and job satisfaction. In other words, if a teacher has good competence, it will encourage increased work motivation, which in turn contributes to higher job satisfaction.
Discussion
The findings of this study have important implications for school management. Teacher competence is a critical factor in improving the quality of education, and school management should prioritize the development of teacher competencies. This can be done through training, workshops, and sustainable professionalism improvement programs.
