Swear Words In Reynhard Sinaga's Case In The Social Media 'Twitter': A Sociolinguistic Study
Introduction
The case of Reynhard Sinaga, a serial rapist who preyed on vulnerable men in Manchester, has sparked widespread outrage and concern on social media platforms, particularly on Twitter. The public's reaction to this heinous crime has been diverse, with many users expressing their feelings and opinions through tweets. One interesting aspect of this phenomenon is the use of rough words or swear words in tweets related to the case. This study aims to explore the types of rough words used, how they are realized contextually, and the reasons behind their use.
Background
The use of rough words or swear words in social media has become a common phenomenon, particularly in the context of sensitive or disturbing events. These words can be used to express strong emotions, provoke reactions, or even provide descriptions of events. However, the use of rough words can also be seen as a form of linguistic aggression, which can have negative consequences on individuals and society as a whole.
Methodology
This study analyzed 117 tweets related to the Reynhard Sinaga case, which produced 122 rough words. The analysis was conducted using Michael Swan's theory, which categorizes rough words into strong and weak forms. The study also used a questionnaire distributed through a Bit.ly link to collect data on the reasons behind the use of rough words.
Results
The analysis revealed that the 122 rough words can be grouped into several categories. The most common category is the extensive rough words, which account for 44% of the total. These words are divided into 8 words, 37 phrases, 7 clauses, and 2 sentences. The abusive rough words account for 33% of the total, consisting of 2 words, 15 phrases, 19 clauses, and 4 sentences. The humorous rough words account for 6% of the total, with a composition of 1 phrase, 4 clauses, and 2 sentences. The auxiliar rough words account for 17% of the total, consisting of 3 words, 14 phrases, 3 clauses, and 1 sentence.
Discussion
The results of this study show that Twitter users tend to use strong rough words to express their feelings and reactions to the case of Reynhard Sinaga. This is consistent with Michael Swan's theory, which suggests that strong rough words are more common in social media contexts. The use of strong rough words can be seen as a form of linguistic aggression, which can have negative consequences on individuals and society as a whole.
The analysis also reveals that the context of meaning plays a crucial role in the use of rough words. The three main motives for using rough words are psychological, social, and cultural. The psychological motive is the most common, accounting for 69% of the total. This suggests that Twitter users use rough words to express their feelings and emotions, rather than to provoke reactions or provide descriptions.
Conclusion
This study provides valuable insights into the use of rough words in social media contexts, particularly in the context of sensitive or disturbing events. The results show that Twitter users tend to use strong rough words to express their feelings and reactions, and that the context of meaning plays a crucial role in the use of rough words. This study highlights the importance of awareness of words in communication on public platforms and the need for a deeper understanding of the social dynamics that apply on social media.
Implications
This study has several implications for social media users, researchers, and policymakers. Firstly, it highlights the need for awareness of words in communication on public platforms. Secondly, it suggests that the use of rough words can have negative consequences on individuals and society as a whole. Finally, it emphasizes the importance of understanding the social dynamics that apply on social media and their impact on society.
Recommendations
Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:
- Awareness of words: Social media users should be aware of the words they use in their tweets, particularly in the context of sensitive or disturbing events.
- Linguistic aggression: Researchers and policymakers should be aware of the potential negative consequences of linguistic aggression on individuals and society as a whole.
- Social dynamics: Researchers and policymakers should understand the social dynamics that apply on social media and their impact on society.
Limitations
This study has several limitations. Firstly, the sample size is relatively small, which may limit the generalizability of the findings. Secondly, the study only analyzed tweets related to the Reynhard Sinaga case, which may not be representative of all social media contexts. Finally, the study only used a questionnaire to collect data on the reasons behind the use of rough words, which may not be comprehensive.
Future Research Directions
This study provides several avenues for future research. Firstly, researchers can investigate the use of rough words in other social media contexts, such as Facebook and Instagram. Secondly, researchers can explore the impact of linguistic aggression on individuals and society as a whole. Finally, researchers can investigate the social dynamics that apply on social media and their impact on society.
