Study of Macrozoobenthos Diversity in Lake Lut Tawar, Lut Tawar District, Takengon City, Central Aceh Regency

Introduction

The study of macrozoobenthos diversity in Lake Lut Tawar, Lut Tawar District, Takengon City, Central Aceh Regency, was conducted between November 2009 and March 2010. This study aimed to identify the types of macrozoobenthos and diversity in Lake Lut Tawar, and to find out the relationship between physical and chemical water values and macrozoobenthos diversity index. The study is crucial in understanding aquatic ecosystems, especially in Lake Lut Tawar, which is rich in natural resources.

Methodology

The sampling method used in this study was purposive random sampling, where the sampling station was determined randomly. Sampling was carried out nine times at each station using the Eckman Grab tool and filtered with Surber Net. All samples obtained were then identified in the Laboratory of Natural Resources and Environment Management, the Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of North Sumatra.

Results

The results showed that there were 23 macrozoobenthos genera which were included in three phylum: Annelida, Arthropod, and Mollusca. Goniobasis was recorded to have the highest population density, which is 101.23 individuals/m² at station I, while hydrobia, gomphus, Helobdella, Kogotus, and Thiara have the lowest population density, which is 1.23 individuals/m². At station II, hydrobia has the highest population density with 133.33 individuals/m², while Boyeria, Placobdell, and Ophiogomphus have the lowest density of 1.23 individuals/m². Station III shows that Melanoides has the highest density of 103.70 individuals/m², while elimia is recorded with the lowest density of 1.23 individuals/m².

The highest diversity index (H ') is found in station II with a value of 2,229, while the lowest index in station III with a value of 1,814. Correlation analysis using the Pearson test shows that oxygen saturation has a very strong and positive relationship with macrozoobenthos diversity.

Deeper Analysis

Research on the diversity of macrozoobenthos is very important in understanding aquatic ecosystems, especially in Lake Lut Tawar which is rich in natural resources. This diversity not only shows environmental health but can also be an indicator of water quality. The relationship between macrozoobenthos diversity index and physical condition and water chemistry, especially oxygen saturation, reflects the fact that macrozoobenthos are very dependent on water quality. The availability of sufficient oxygen in water can support the life of this organism, which in turn contributes to the stability of the ecosystem.

In the context of natural resource management, the results of this study can be a reference for conservation and lake management efforts. Policies that maintain water quality and natural habitat macrozoobenthos need to be applied to prevent decreased biodiversity, which can have a negative impact on ecosystems and communities that depend on the lake.

Conclusion

Thus, this study provides an important insight into the dynamics of Lake Tawar Lake ecosystems and can be guidelines for further research and future environmental preservation programs. The study highlights the importance of maintaining water quality and natural habitat macrozoobenthos to prevent decreased biodiversity, which can have a negative impact on ecosystems and communities that depend on the lake.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

  1. Conservation efforts: Conservation efforts should be implemented to maintain the natural habitat of macrozoobenthos in Lake Lut Tawar.
  2. Water quality management: Water quality management policies should be implemented to maintain the physical and chemical water values that support the life of macrozoobenthos.
  3. Research and monitoring: Further research and monitoring should be conducted to understand the dynamics of Lake Tawar Lake ecosystems and to identify the factors that affect macrozoobenthos diversity.
  4. Environmental preservation programs: Environmental preservation programs should be implemented to protect the natural resources of Lake Lut Tawar and to maintain the biodiversity of macrozoobenthos.

Limitations

This study has several limitations, including:

  1. Sampling method: The sampling method used in this study was purposive random sampling, which may not be representative of the entire lake.
  2. Sample size: The sample size used in this study was limited, which may not be sufficient to represent the entire lake.
  3. Data analysis: The data analysis used in this study was limited to correlation analysis, which may not be sufficient to understand the complex relationships between macrozoobenthos diversity and physical and chemical water values.

Future Research Directions

Future research directions include:

  1. Long-term monitoring: Long-term monitoring should be conducted to understand the dynamics of Lake Tawar Lake ecosystems and to identify the factors that affect macrozoobenthos diversity.
  2. Experimental studies: Experimental studies should be conducted to understand the effects of different physical and chemical water values on macrozoobenthos diversity.
  3. Comparative studies: Comparative studies should be conducted to understand the differences in macrozoobenthos diversity between different lakes and ecosystems.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study provides an important insight into the dynamics of Lake Tawar Lake ecosystems and can be guidelines for further research and future environmental preservation programs. The study highlights the importance of maintaining water quality and natural habitat macrozoobenthos to prevent decreased biodiversity, which can have a negative impact on ecosystems and communities that depend on the lake.
