Introduction
The success of tourism development is heavily reliant on the readiness and support of the local community. Without a strong foundation of community support, tourism programs can be hindered or even fail. This research aims to analyze the readiness of the community and government in South Nias Regency in developing Nias tourism, with a focus on the villages of Bawomataluo and Sorake Beach. By examining the community's efforts, knowledge, leadership, and involvement, this study seeks to identify the factors that contribute to the success or failure of tourism development in these two locations.
Methodology
This study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative research methods. The correlational method was used to analyze the relationship between community efforts and tourism development. Data was collected through a combination of questionnaires, interviews, observations, and documentation. A total of 123 respondents were selected from the two locations using random sampling cluster. The data analysis was conducted using SPSS, with a product moment correlation test and frequency distribution analysis.
Results
The results of this study showed a positive and strong relationship between community efforts and tourism development in Bawomataluo Village. However, community knowledge, leadership, and involvement were found to have a weak relationship with tourism development in this village. In contrast, Sorake Beach showed a positive and strong relationship between community efforts and tourism development. Nevertheless, community knowledge, leadership, and involvement were found to have no significant relationship with tourism development in this location.
Discussion
The differences in results between the two locations highlight the varying levels of community readiness. In Bawomataluo Village, the community is more active in participating and supporting tourism development, whereas at Sorake Beach, community involvement is still relatively low. This disparity can be attributed to the lack of synergy between institutions in the development of South Nias Tourism. According to the theory of structural differentiation by Talcott Parsons, this study identified the need for improved coordination and cooperation between the Regional Government and the local community in achieving the goal of developing South Nias Tourism.
Recommendations
Based on the findings of this study, several recommendations are proposed to improve community readiness and tourism development in South Nias Regency:
- Increasing public awareness and knowledge about the benefits of tourism development: This can be achieved through education and training programs that raise awareness about the importance of tourism and its potential benefits for the community.
