Introduction
The study of biology of rice fields in Sunggal District, Deli Serdang Regency, is crucial to determine the fertility status of paddy soils in the area. The analysis of paddy soil biology can provide valuable insights into the characteristics of the soil, which can affect agricultural productivity. This study aims to analyze the nature of biology of paddy soil in Sunggal District, Deli Serdang Regency, to determine the fertility status of paddy soils in the area.
Methodology
The analysis was conducted at the Biology Laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra during the period May to August 2017. A total of 17 paddy samples consisting of rain-fed and irrigation land were taken as research material. The method used is a survey with sampling through stratified random sampling based on the type of paddy fields. The analysis process includes the measurement of soil pH using the electrometry method, determining the content of soil organic matter with the Walkley and Black method, total nitrogen nutrient analysis using the Kjeldhal method, the availability of phosphorus (P) with the Bray II method, and the analysis of base cations (K+, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+) through NH4OAC extraction pH 7. In addition, the Cation Exchange Capacity (CTK) is also analyzed using a similar method, and base saturation is calculated based on the data obtained.
Research Result
The results of this study indicate that rain-fed and irrigation rice fields in Sunggal District generally have a dominant pH that is rather sour. The organic C content in the soil is relatively low, while total nitrogen is also in the low category. The availability of phosphorus (P) is very low, and potassium levels (K) that can be exchanged are also low. Calcium (CA) which can be exchanged is relatively low, while Magnesium (Mg) indicates a medium value. Sodium (Na) that can be exchanged is at a low level, the dominant CTK is moderate, and the boredom of base (KB) is classified as very low.
From this analysis, the status of paddy soil fertility in Sunggal District can be categorized from very low to low. Even so, an interesting fact was found in Puji Mulyo Village, where the paddy fields in this village have moderate fertility status. This is caused by the high content of organic C in the rice fields in that location.

This finding shows that the characteristics of soil biology are very influential on agricultural productivity in Sunggal District. The high dependence on the irrigation system without regard to the nutrient content in the soil has the potential to reduce soil fertility in the long run. Therefore, it is important for farmers to do better soil management, including the application of organic fertilizer and soil conservation techniques to increase nutrient content.
Increased awareness of the importance of sustainable land management can help maintain the fertility of paddy soils.
