Challenges of Fishermen's Children's Education: Socio-Economic Factors in Fishermen Village Environment XII, Medan Belawan

Introduction

Fisherman Village of Environmental XII in Belawan I Village, Medan Belawan, is a community that has been struggling to meet the basic needs of life. Behind the simplicity of their lives, lies a significant challenge that affects the motivation of fishermen children to study. This research aims to explore the socio-economic factors that influence the motivation of fishermen children to attend school.

Background

The motivation of fishermen children to go to school is a crucial aspect of their education. However, the results of this study show that the motivation of fishermen children in this region is in the medium category. This indicates that fishermen children have not been fully encouraged to take tertiary education. The main factor that becomes an obstacle is their own view, which considers education has no significant influence on their future.

Methodology

This study used the simple random sampling method to take random samples from the fishermen family who have relatively the same socio-economic culture and facilities. The study analyzed the level of motivation of fishermen children to attend school and identified the socio-economic factors that influence their motivation.

Results

The results of this study show that the motivation of fishermen children to go to school is influenced by five independent variables: family income, family dependents, fishermen's perceptions, fishermen's cosmopolitan levels, and infrastructure. These variables together have an influence of 70.5% on the motivation of fishermen children to go to school. However, it turns out that the school environmental factors, such as inter-student relations and students' relationships with teachers, also play an important role in shaping the motivation of fishermen children.

The Role of Fishermen's Perception

This study shows that the perception of fishermen on education has a very significant influence (68%) on the motivation of fishermen children to go to school. The more positive the perception of fishermen towards education, the higher the support, attention, and motivation they give to their children to reach higher levels of education. This is important considering that many fishermen are trapped in the poverty cycle and seeing education as a less important thing.

Increasing Awareness of Fishermen

Increased awareness of fishermen about the importance of education for the future of their children is the key to increasing learning motivation. Educational and socialization programs to fishermen about the importance of education for the future of their children must be encouraged.

Solutions to Bridge the Gap

The results of this study provide a clear picture of the challenges faced by fishermen children in accessing education. Some solutions that can be applied to overcome this include:

Increasing the Perception of Fishermen

  • Educational and socialization programs to fishermen about the importance of education for the future of their children must be encouraged.
  • Introducing inspirational figures from fishermen who are successful through education can motivate fishermen children to dream big.

Improving School Quality

  • Schools in fishing areas need special attention to have adequate facilities and teaching staff.
  • Economic Assistance Program for Families Fishermen who are less able can help ease the burden on the cost of their children's education.

Building the Role of the Model

  • Introducing inspirational figures from fishermen who are successful through education can motivate fishermen children to dream big.

Conclusion

This study provides a deeper understanding of the factors that influence the motivation of fishermen children to go to school. By understanding these factors, it is hoped that the right strategy can be formulated to increase access to education and open up better future opportunities for fishermen children.
