Self-Concepts of Women's Journalists: A Qualitative Descriptive Study at the Indonesian Women's Journalist Forum in Medan City

Introduction

The world of journalism has long been dominated by men, with women often facing challenges and obstacles in their careers. However, in recent years, there has been a growing trend of women entering the field of journalism, and making significant contributions to the industry. This study aims to explore the self-concepts of women's journalists, specifically those who are members of the Indonesian Women's Journalist Forum (FJPI) in Medan City. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this research aims to describe the concept of self and the position of female journalists in the world of journalism.

Methodology

This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach, which allowed researchers to uncover the exposure and general picture of the self-concept and position of women in the world of journalists. Five informants were selected using purposive sampling, a technique based on research objectives and needs. Through in-depth interviews, researchers were able to gather rich and detailed data on the self-concepts of female journalists.

Results

The results of this study showed that female journalists have a positive self-concept. They display a good self-image and have high self-esteem, reflecting the recognition of their abilities and contributions in the journalism industry. Despite facing challenges such as physical violence, unwanted seduction, and insults, informants still feel proud of their profession as female journalists. A consistency emerged among the five informants, where they remained committed to undergoing careers in the world of journalists, even though there were three of them who felt their income was not comparable to the hard work done.

Analysis and Implications

The dominant positive female journalist self-concept has important implications in the development of the media industry in Indonesia. First, this shows that women have succeeded in occupying more equal space in journalism, which were previously often dominated by men. The active involvement of women in journalism can create a more diverse perspective in reporting, which of course will provide more holistic information for the public.

Second, recognition of women's position and contribution in the world of journalists needs to be supported through better professional training and development programs. By paying attention to the challenges that still exist, such as violence and discrimination, media institutions must be committed to creating a safe and supportive work environment for all journalists, especially women.

Third, this research also shows the need for public awareness of the important role of women in journalism. The community is expected to be able to better appreciate the works of female journalists and treat them equally. The gender equality campaign in the media will further enhance the image of female journalists and strengthen their contributions in building a more inclusive society.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study provides a deeper understanding of the self-concepts of female journalists in the Medan City FJPI. The results show that female journalists have a positive self-concept, which is reflected in their good self-image and high self-esteem. Despite facing challenges, informants still feel proud of their profession as female journalists.
