In this study, we aim to investigate the presence of Rhodamin B in lipstick cosmetics circulating in USU Tax Medan City in 2019 and identify the health complaints experienced by consumers who use these products.

Lipstick cosmetics are widely used by individuals to enhance their appearance. However, the use of synthetic dyes in these products has raised concerns about their safety. Rhodamin B, a synthetic dye, has been linked to various health problems, including irritation of the respiratory tract, skin, eyes, and digestion, poisoning, and even liver cancer. Despite these risks, Rhodamin B is still widely used in the production of lipstick cosmetics.

Research Methodology

This study involved 6 lipstick cosmetic samples and 96 consumers who bought the product. Data was collected using a questionnaire to find out the most sold products and accidental sampling methods to select consumers who are the object of research. Rhodamin B identification was carried out by paper chromatography methods and examinations under UV rays 254. The questionnaire was also used to record health complaints experienced by consumers.

Research Results

The results showed that one of six lipstick cosmetic samples contain Rhodamin B. Sample S, with a RF value of 0.33, shows the same color spot with Rhodamin B under the UV ray 254. This finding suggests that Rhodamin B is still widely used in the production of lipstick cosmetics, despite the known health risks associated with its use.

As many as 56 consumers experience chapped lips, become the most reported health complaints. This indicates the possibility of the adverse effects of using lipstick cosmetics containing Rhodamin B.
