Introduction
The use of vegetative propagation techniques, such as shoot cuttings, has become a popular method for increasing plant productivity and meeting the growing demand for plant materials. However, the success of this method depends on various factors, including the size of the cuttings diameter and the concentration of the hormone indol acetic acid (IAA). In this study, we investigated the effect of the size of the cuttings diameter and the concentration of IAA on the growth of shoot cuttings of the Siamese (Styrax toninensis).
Background
Styrax toninensis is a species of tree that is native to Southeast Asia and is known for its high demand in the timber industry. However, the traditional method of propagation using seeds has several limitations, including low germination rates and slow growth rates. Therefore, the use of vegetative propagation techniques, such as shoot cuttings, has become a popular method for increasing plant productivity and meeting the growing demand for plant materials.
Methodology
This study was conducted at the Sumatran Forestry Research and Development Center, Aek Nauli, North Sumatra, from April to July 2004. The study used a factorial random group design (RAK) to investigate the effect of the size of the cuttings diameter and the concentration of IAA on the growth of shoot cuttings of the Siamese (Styrax toninensis). The study consisted of two treatment factors: the size of the cutting diameter, which was divided into two categories, namely large diameter (D1) and small diameter (D2), and the IAA concentration, which consisted of six treatment levels, namely control (0 ppm), 500 ppm, 1000 ppm, 1500 ppm, 2000 ppm, and 2500 ppm.
Results
The results of the study showed that the size of the cuttings diameter and the IAA concentration had a significant effect on the length of the shoot length, the length of the root, and the number of roots. However, other parameters, such as living power, number of leaves, and root quality, did not show a significant effect.
The results showed that cuttings with a large diameter (D1) had a better life power, with a percentage reaching 65%, compared to small diameter cuttings (D2) which only reached 53%. The number of leaves in large diameter cuttings was also higher, with an average of 2.23, compared to 1.67 in small diameter cuttings. The length of the shoots in large diameter cuttings was also better, with an average of 1.29 cm, compared to 0.77 cm in small diameter cuttings. Similarly, the root length in large diameter cuttings was higher, with an average of 0.78 cm, compared to 1.02 cm in small diameter cuttings.
Discussion
The results of this study showed that the size of the cuttings diameter and the IAA concentration had a significant effect on the growth of shoot cuttings of the Siamese (Styrax toninensis). The study also showed that the application of the IAA hormone can still increase the growth of S. Tonkinensis shoot cuttings, even though the IAA concentration did not have a significant effect on all growth parameters.
