Introduction

The production department of PT Toba Pulp Lestari, Tbk. is one of the companies that have implemented work shifts to meet their production targets. This study aims to understand the relationship between work shifts and work stress experienced by employees of the DCS operator section in the production department of PT Toba Pulp Lestari Tbk in 2017.

Methodology

This study used an analytic method with a cross-sectional study design. The sample taken consisted of 32 workers, which is the total population of the DCS operator section in the production department of PT Toba Pulp Lestari Tbk in 2017. Work stress was measured using the 2003 HSE questionnaire. To find out the relationship between work shifts and work stress, researchers applied Chi-Square statistical tests with Fisher Exact options.

Results

The results showed that of 32 workers, as many as 56.3% experienced stress with a high level, while 43.8% experienced stress with a medium level. From the analysis of the Chi-Square test with the Fisher Exact option, the P value was obtained of 0,000 (p <0.05), which indicated a significant relationship between work shifts and work stress among DCS operator employees.

Changes in working hours and shift rotation can often be a source of stress for employees. Various factors, such as the uncertainty of the schedule, the lack of time for adequate rest, as well as the discrepancy between working hours and the biological rhythm of the body, can worsen the mental and physical health conditions of employees.
