This increase is accompanied by changes in lifestyle patterns that can contribute to various health problems. At the Medan Pasar Pasar Puskesmas, around 50 elderly every month complained of various health problems such as joint pain, headaches, insomnia, coughing, and tingling throughout the body. In addition, many elderly people suffer from diseases such as hypertension, mild stroke, diabetes mellitus, and rheumatism. Some of them even have a history of smoking. This study aims to analyze the relationship between lifestyle and the health status of the elderly in the working area of the Medan Pasar Red Health Center in 2014.
Understanding the Research Methodology
This study uses analytic observational methods with cross-sectional design, which was carried out from January to August 2014. The population studied was 1,949 elderly aged over 45 years registered and received health services at the Pasar Red Puskesmas Medan. From this population, 96 elderly were chosen as a sample using proportional sampling techniques. Data analysis was carried out using the logistics regression test at the level of significance α = 0.05.
Results and Discussion: Uncovering the Relationship between Lifestyle and Health Status
The results showed that there was a significant relationship between several lifestyle factors and the health status of the elderly. The diet variable has a trust interval (95%CI) of 1.90 to 11.95 with a prevalence ratio (Rp) of 2.42. This shows that poor eating patterns can increase the risk of health problems. Furthermore, physical activity (95%CI = 1.57 - 9.43 with Rp 2.12) and resting habits (95%CI = 1.16 - 9.41 with Rp 2.03) also showed a strong relationship with health elderly. In addition, a history of smoking (95%CI = 1.02 - 7.70 with Rp 1.57) also contributed to a decrease in health status.
From this analysis, eating patterns proven to be the most dominant factor in influencing the health status of the elderly. This shows how important it is to pay attention to diet as part of a healthy lifestyle. A healthy diet provides the necessary nutrients for the body to function properly, and can help prevent various health problems. On the other hand, a poor diet can lead to malnutrition, which can exacerbate existing health conditions.
