Relationship of Knowledge and Community Attitudes with Receiving Covid-19 Vaccination in the Working Area of the Bergam Village Assistant Puskesmas, Binjai Kota in 2022

Introduction

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the world, with millions of cases reported globally. Indonesia, one of the countries most affected by the pandemic, has implemented various measures to control the spread of the virus, including the COVID-19 vaccination program. The application of the COVID-19 vaccination program in Indonesia began on January 13, 2021, with a vaccine produced by Sinovac. Despite the significant vaccination rate in the Berbat Kelurahan, there are still challenges in receiving vaccination, especially those related to the knowledge and attitudes of the community. This study aims to examine the relationship between knowledge and community attitudes towards the reception of the COVID-19 vaccination in the working area of the Bergam Village Assistant Puskesmas, Binjai City in 2022.

Background

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the world, with millions of cases reported globally. Indonesia, one of the countries most affected by the pandemic, has implemented various measures to control the spread of the virus, including the COVID-19 vaccination program. The application of the COVID-19 vaccination program in Indonesia began on January 13, 2021, with a vaccine produced by Sinovac. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 605 million COVID-19 confirmation cases worldwide, with Indonesia ranked second after India in the number of cases. The mortality rate due to COVID-19 in Indonesia reached 2.46 percent, showing an urgency to increase the level of vaccination.

Methodology

This study uses a quantitative analytical approach with cross-sectional design, involving 95 respondents aged over 17 years chosen proportionally through random sampling techniques. The data was collected through a questionnaire that assessed the knowledge and attitudes of the respondents towards the COVID-19 vaccine. The questionnaire consisted of 20 questions that assessed the knowledge of the respondents about the COVID-19 vaccine, including its benefits, safety, and effectiveness. The attitudes of the respondents towards the vaccine were also assessed through a series of questions that evaluated their perception of the vaccine.

Results

The results showed that of 95 respondents, 38.9 percent had good knowledge about the COVID-19 vaccine, while 45.3 percent had a positive attitude towards the vaccine. However, 89.5 percent of them are willing to get vaccination. Bivariate analysis conducted with Fisher's Exact Test shows that there is no significant relationship between knowledge of the COVID-19 vaccine and vaccine reception (p = 0.307). However, there is a significant relationship between community attitudes regarding vaccines and vaccination receipts (p = 0.020).

Discussion

This finding confirms that knowledge alone is not enough to increase vaccination acceptance, but a positive attitude towards vaccination is a stronger determinant factor. Therefore, it is important for the authorities to emphasize the exact counseling and education more about the benefits and safety of the COVID-19 vaccination. The community needs to be given accurate and reliable information to overcome the existing doubts and encourage them to participate in the vaccination program. By taking an appropriate approach to providing information and changing the attitude of the community, it is expected that the reception of the Covid-19 vaccination in the working area of the Bergam Sub-District Health Center can increase.
