Understanding the Prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Diabetes mellitus is one of the biggest health problems in the world, affecting millions of people globally. According to reports from the International Diabetes Federation, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) continues to increase globally. In 2017, the prevalence of T2DM was recorded at 5.64 percent, and increased to 5.98 percent in 2019. The increase in the T2DM incident was inseparable from the increase in the number of complications that accompanied it. This study aims to determine the relationship between individual characteristics and physical activity with complications in T2DM patients in Dr. Tengku Mansyur in 2024.
Research Methodology
This study employed a quantitative research design with a cross-sectional approach. The population of this study covers all outpatients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who visit the Internal Medicine Clinic at Dr. Tengku Mansyur. A total of 83 respondents were chosen as samples using accidental sampling techniques. Data analysis was carried out descriptively with the Univariate and Bivariate approach using the Chi-Square test.
Results and Findings
The results showed that the proportion of complications in T2DM patients in Dr. Tengku Mansyur in 2024 reached 55.4%. The chi-square test results indicate a significant relationship between age variables (p <0.05), education level (p <0.05), obesity (p <0.05), long suffering (p <0.05), and physical activity (p <0.05) with the incidence of complications. Meanwhile, the sex variables do not show a significant relationship with the incidence of complications (P> 0.05).

From this study, it appears that individual factors and physical activity behavior play an important role in the risk of complications in T2DM patients. Age and length of suffering become a crucial factor, because patients who are older and have suffered longer are at higher risk of experiencing complications. This may be caused by decreased function of organs and body systems as we get older.
