The Relationship of Hospital Commitment Factors and Characteristics of Maternity Mother with the Success Rate of the Implementation of the Exclusive ASI Program in Three Hospitals in Labuhanbatu Regency in 2004

Introduction

The National Movement for Increasing the Use of ASI launched by the President of the Republic of Indonesia is a significant step towards improving the health and welfare of infants in Indonesia. The target is to have all mothers give exclusive breastfeeding until the age of 4-6 months to their babies. However, in its implementation, there are still many obstacles encountered, including in Labuhanbatu Regency. This study aims to examine the factors that influence the success of the exclusive breastfeeding program in three hospitals in Labuhanbatu Regency in 2004.

Background

The exclusive breastfeeding program is a crucial initiative to improve the health and welfare of infants in Indonesia. However, the success of this program depends on various factors, including the characteristics of maternity mothers and the commitment of hospitals. This study focuses on the relationship between hospital commitment factors and the characteristics of maternity mother with the success rate of the implementation of the exclusive ASI program in three hospitals in Labuhanbatu Regency in 2004.

Methodology

This study uses a "cross sectional" design that involves measuring independent variables (characteristics of maternity and hospital commitment) and dependent variables (the success of the exclusive breastfeeding program) simultaneously. The samples of this research are 62 maternity mothers who gave birth in the three hospitals, namely the Rantau Prapat General Hospital, PTPN III Aek Nabara Hospital, and the Maternity Hospital of Rantau Prapat.

Results

The results show that of the 7 independent variables studied, there are 3 variables that have a significant relationship with the success of the exclusive ASI program:

Psychic Health Mother Maternity

Mother maternity with healthy psychological conditions is more likely to provide exclusive breastfeeding. This can be caused by several factors, such as:

Social Support

Mother with strong social support from family and friends is easier to face the challenges of breastfeeding.

Confidence

Mother who is confident and has sufficient knowledge about ASI and its benefits will be easier to apply exclusive breastfeeding.

Lack of Stress

Mothers who experience stress tend to have difficulty producing breast milk.

Hospital Commitment

Hospitals that have a strong commitment to the exclusive breastfeeding program will be more effective in supporting breastfeeding mothers. This can be seen in the form of:

Clear Policy

Hospitals need to have a clear policy on exclusive breastfeeding, including the provision of facilities and education for mothers.

Training of Officers

Health workers in the hospital need to be well trained to provide appropriate information and support to breastfeeding mothers.

Support to Mother

Hospitals need to provide a comfortable lactation space and emotional support to breastfeeding mothers.

ASI Promotion

Effective and continuous ASI promotion is very important in increasing the awareness and motivation of mothers to provide exclusive breastfeeding. The hospital can play a role in this matter by:

Dissemination of Information

Providing brochures, leaflets, and videos about ASI and its benefits.

Group Discussion

Held group discussions with pregnant and breastfeeding women to discuss the importance of exclusive breastfeeding.

Displays Posters and Banners

Install posters and banners in the hospital area to promote breast milk.

Conclusion

This study provides an important recommendation to the head of the hospital to make a clear policy and contained in the procedure (permanent procedure) regarding exclusive breastfeeding. This will ensure that all health workers understand and carry out the correct procedures in providing support to breastfeeding mothers. In addition, ASI promotion needs to be done consistently and effectively in the three hospitals in Labuhanbatu Regency. With a strong commitment from the hospital and appropriate support for maternity mothers, it is hoped that the exclusive breastfeeding program can run well and provide optimal benefits for the health of infants in Labuhanbatu Regency.

Recommendation

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

  • The head of the hospital should make a clear policy and contained in the procedure (permanent procedure) regarding exclusive breastfeeding.
  • ASI promotion needs to be done consistently and effectively in the three hospitals in Labuhanbatu Regency.
  • Health workers in the hospital need to be well trained to provide appropriate information and support to breastfeeding mothers.
  • Hospitals need to provide a comfortable lactation space and emotional support to breastfeeding mothers.
  • Mother maternity with healthy psychological conditions is more likely to provide exclusive breastfeeding.

Limitation

This study has several limitations, including:

  • The sample size is relatively small.
  • The study only focuses on three hospitals in Labuhanbatu Regency.
  • The study only examines the relationship between hospital commitment factors and the characteristics of maternity mother with the success rate of the implementation of the exclusive ASI program.

Future Research

Future research should focus on:

  • Examining the relationship between other factors and the success rate of the implementation of the exclusive ASI program.
  • Conducting a larger-scale study to increase the generalizability of the findings.
  • Examining the effectiveness of ASI promotion in increasing the awareness and motivation of mothers to provide exclusive breastfeeding.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study provides an important contribution to the understanding of the relationship between hospital commitment factors and the characteristics of maternity mother with the success rate of the implementation of the exclusive ASI program in three hospitals in Labuhanbatu Regency in 2004. The findings of this study have important implications for the implementation of the exclusive breastfeeding program in Indonesia.
