Introduction

Water is a vital component of the human body, making up 60-70% of its mass and playing a crucial role in various functions of organs and body systems. The importance of fluids in maintaining proper bodily functions cannot be overstated. Lack of fluids or dehydration can lead to a range of health problems, from mild symptoms such as thirst and dry mouth to more severe conditions like digestive disorders and impaired kidney function.

In light of the significance of fluids in maintaining overall health, it is essential to increase awareness and knowledge about body fluids among individuals, particularly those in the medical field. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the level of knowledge about body fluids and hydration status in students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra.

Methodology

This study employed a cross-sectional analytic approach, involving 99 students from the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra, who were selected randomly. Data on the level of knowledge about body fluids was collected through a questionnaire, while the hydration status was measured using a urine color graph.

Results

The results of this study revealed that 48 students were dehydrated. Notably, no students were found to have less knowledge about body fluids, while 51 students had moderate knowledge. Statistical analysis using the Chi-Square test showed a significant relationship between the level of knowledge and hydration status (p = 0.034).

Discussion

The findings of this study confirm that knowledge about body fluids has a significant influence on the status of hydration in students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra. This suggests that increased awareness and education about the importance of body fluids can be a key to increasing fluid consumption behavior and preventing dehydration.

Further Analysis

The results of this study have important implications for efforts to increase awareness and knowledge about body fluids among students of the Faculty of Medicine. Although no students were found to have less knowledge, more effective education efforts are still needed to encourage better fluid consumption behavior.

Medical students, as prospective health workers, have an essential role in socializing the importance of hydration and providing education to the community. Increased knowledge about body fluids can be one of the strategies to prevent dehydration and improve overall health.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

  • Further Research: It is necessary to conduct further research with a longitudinal design to examine the long-term effect of education intervention on body fluids on hydration status.
  • Improved Educational Programs: Improvement of educational programs about comprehensive, interesting, and easy-to-understand body fluids for students of the Faculty of Medicine.
  • Development of Educational Materials: Development of creative and innovative educational material, such as videos, posters, or workshops, to increase awareness of the importance of hydration.
  • Access to Clean Drinking Water: Increasing access to clean and safe drinking water sources in the campus environment.

Conclusion

This study proves that there is a close relationship between the level of knowledge about body fluids and hydration status. Increased knowledge and education about the importance of body fluids can be a key to increasing fluid consumption behavior and preventing dehydration in students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra.

Limitations

This study has several limitations that should be acknowledged. Firstly, the sample size was relatively small, which may limit the generalizability of the findings. Secondly, the study relied on self-reported data, which may be subject to biases and inaccuracies. Finally, the study did not examine the long-term effects of education intervention on body fluids on hydration status.

Future Directions

Future studies should aim to address these limitations by using larger sample sizes, more objective measures of hydration status, and longitudinal designs to examine the long-term effects of education intervention on body fluids on hydration status.
