Understanding the Prevalence of Scabies in Modern Islamic Boarding Schools

Scabies is a skin infection caused by microscopic parasites that often attack populations living in crowded conditions, such as boarding schools, orphanages, and other residences with poor sanitation. According to data, the incidence of scabies in 2014 reached 130 million people worldwide, while in Indonesia, the prevalence was recorded at 6% in 2013. Although there was a decline in prevalence, scabies remains one of the significant public health problems in Indonesia, especially in tropical climates. This condition is exacerbated by poor personal hygiene behavior, low socioeconomic status, and life habits that do not support health.

The age of children and adolescents is the most vulnerable group to scabies, with more common transmission among men. This study aims to analyze the relationship between individual hygiene behavior and the incidence of scabies in the Modern Islamic Boarding School Darul Hikmah Medan City. By understanding the factors contributing to the spread of scabies, we can develop effective strategies to prevent and control this disease.

Research Methods: Analyzing the Relationship between Individual Cleanliness Behavior and Scabies Incidence

This study uses analytic methods with a cross-sectional design. Samples are taken from all students of grades 7 to 12 with the total sampling method. The data obtained is primary data, where researchers observe the cardinal signs of scabies and do skin scrapings for microscopic analysis. In addition, the questionnaire is used to assess children's hygiene behavior, and observations are carried out to assess the environmental sanitation of the pesantren.

The research design allows us to examine the relationship between individual cleanliness behavior and the incidence of scabies in a specific population. By analyzing the data, we can identify the factors that contribute to the spread of scabies and develop targeted interventions to prevent and control the disease.

Research Results: Incidence of Scabies and Relationship with Individual Cleanliness Behavior

Of the 220 respondents, there were 81 cases of scabies, which showed the incidence of 36.8%. The most common cases of scabies are in early adolescents, with a higher prevalence in men than women. The analysis shows a significant relationship between individual cleaning behavior and the incidence of scabies in the Modern Islamic Boarding School in Medan City, with the value of P = 0.001. In addition, the results of environmental sanitation assessments show that sanitation conditions in Islamic boarding schools are still not good, especially in three aspects: the availability of clean water, residential density, and storage of personal goods.

The results of this study highlight the importance of individual hygiene behavior in preventing infectious diseases such as scabies. Good hygiene behavior includes the habit of washing hands, maintaining cleanliness of clothing and the environment, and avoiding direct contact with infected individuals.

Analysis and Discussion: The Role of Individual Cleanliness Behavior in Preventing Scabies

The results of this study illustrate the importance of individual hygiene behavior in preventing infectious diseases such as scabies. Good hygiene behavior includes the habit of washing hands, maintaining cleanliness of clothing and the environment, and avoiding direct contact with infected individuals. The dense environment and lack of sanitation also contributes to the transmission of this disease, so it is important for boarding school managers to improve sanitation conditions and educate students about the importance of cleanliness.

Increasing awareness of good cleaning behavior will not only reduce the incidence of scabies, but can also prevent various other infectious diseases. Interventions such as socialization about the importance of cleanliness, the provision of adequate sanitation facilities, and periodic health monitoring in Islamic boarding schools can be an effective step in overcoming this problem.

Conclusion: The Significance of Individual Cleanliness Behavior in Preventing Scabies

There is a significant relationship between individual hygiene behavior and the incidence of scabies in the Modern Islamic Boarding School in Darul Hikmah, Medan City. Efforts to improve individual cleaning behavior and environmental sanitation conditions are very important to reduce the incidence of scabies, especially among adolescents who are the most vulnerable groups. Increased education about health and sanitation in Islamic boarding schools is one of the effective solutions in preventing scabies infections and other infectious diseases.

By understanding the relationship between individual cleanliness behavior and the incidence of scabies, we can develop targeted interventions to prevent and control this disease. The results of this study highlight the importance of individual hygiene behavior in preventing infectious diseases such as scabies and provide a framework for developing effective strategies to prevent and control this disease in modern Islamic boarding schools.

Recommendations for Future Research

  1. Longitudinal Study: Conduct a longitudinal study to examine the relationship between individual cleanliness behavior and the incidence of scabies over time.
  2. Intervention Study: Conduct an intervention study to evaluate the effectiveness of targeted interventions to improve individual cleanliness behavior and reduce the incidence of scabies.

Limitations of the Study

  1. Sample Size: The sample size of this study is relatively small, which may limit the generalizability of the results.
  2. Selection Bias: The study may be subject to selection bias, as the sample was selected from a specific population.
  3. Measurement Error: The study may be subject to measurement error, as the data was collected using self-reported questionnaires and observational methods.

Future Directions

  1. Development of Interventions: Develop targeted interventions to improve individual cleanliness behavior and reduce the incidence of scabies.
  2. Evaluation of Interventions: Evaluate the effectiveness of targeted interventions to improve individual cleanliness behavior and reduce the incidence of scabies.
