Emotional Mental Stressors and Mental Disorders in Palm Oil Mill: Case Study Analysis at PT. Asianagro Agung Jaya

The crude palm oil processing industry is a significant contributor to the economy of many countries, including Indonesia. However, the industry is also known to have a negative impact on the mental health of its workers. This study aims to examine the relationship between work stressors and emotional mental disorders in workers at PT. Asianagro Agung Jaya, a crude palm oil processing factory in Tanjungbalai City, Indonesia in 2013.

The crude palm oil processing industry is a labor-intensive industry that requires workers to work in a physically demanding environment. The industry is also known to have a high level of noise, heat, and poor sanitation, which can contribute to work stress and mental health problems. In addition, the industry is also known to have a high level of role conflict, unclear role, and excessive workload, which can also contribute to work stress and mental health problems.

This study used a cross-sectional study design with a survey method, involving 59 workers as research samples. The data was collected using a stress (SDS) and Symptom Check List-90 (SCL-90) survey questionnaire. The study used univariate analysis to examine the level of work stress and mental emotional disorders among the respondents. The study also used bivariate analysis using the Chi-Square test to examine the relationship between work stressors and emotional mental disorders. Finally, the study used multivariate analysis with multiple regression tests to examine the relationship between work stressors and emotional mental disorders.

The results of the study showed that the level of work stress among the respondents was high, with 30 people experiencing mental emotional disorders. The most common disorder experienced was somatization. The bivariate analysis using the Chi-Square test showed a significant relationship between the overall work stressor (lack of clarity of role, role conflict, quantitative excessive workload, qualitative excessive workload, and responsibility) with emotional mental disorders. The multivariate analysis with multiple regression tests showed that excessive (quantitative) workload was the most powerful stressor that had a relationship with emotional mental disorders.

The results of the study suggest that the crude palm oil processing industry has a significant impact on the mental health of its workers. The high level of work stress and mental emotional disorders among the respondents suggests that the industry needs to take steps to improve the work environment and reduce work stress. The study suggests that companies consider improving work shift systems and provide opportunities for holidays for workers to reduce workload and fatigue. This is important to prevent the negative impact of work stressors on worker's emotional mental health.

This study provides an overview of the importance of paying attention to the mental health of workers' emotional health in the oil palm processing industry. By understanding the factors that cause stress and their impact on mental health, companies can take the right steps to create a healthier work environment and support worker welfare. The study suggests that companies need to take steps to improve the work environment, reduce work stress, and provide opportunities for holidays for workers to reduce workload and fatigue.

Based on the results of the study, the following recommendations are made:

  • Companies need to consider improving work shift systems to reduce workload and fatigue.
  • Companies need to provide opportunities for holidays for workers to reduce workload and fatigue.
  • Companies need to improve the work environment, such as increasing sanitation, improving the ventilation system, and creating a comfortable and ergonomic rest space.
  • Companies need to provide training and education to workers on stress management and mental health.

This study has several limitations. The study used a cross-sectional study design, which may not be able to capture the longitudinal relationship between work stressors and emotional mental disorders. The study also used a survey method, which may be subject to bias and error. Finally, the study only examined the relationship between work stressors and emotional mental disorders in one company, which may not be generalizable to other companies.

Future research should aim to examine the relationship between work stressors and emotional mental disorders in other companies in the crude palm oil processing industry. Future research should also aim to examine the longitudinal relationship between work stressors and emotional mental disorders. Finally, future research should aim to examine the effectiveness of interventions aimed at reducing work stress and improving mental health in the crude palm oil processing industry.
