Introduction

Cemara Kembar Beach, located in Serdang Berdai Regency, North Sumatra, is a significant waters and a popular tourist destination. The beach's proximity to river mouths makes it a rich habitat for various types of marine life. This study aims to investigate the population density and growth pattern of blood shells (Anadara granosa) on Cemara Kembar Beach, as well as analyze the relationship between physical-chemical factors of water and the density of blood shells. The research was conducted in May 2024 using a systematic sampling point mapping approach.

Methodology

The sampling of blood shells was carried out during low tide, precisely in the morning, by collecting all shells obtained from three specified stations. Each station consisted of four sampling points. The results showed that station 3 had the highest density value, which was 4,571 individuals per hectare (ind/ha), while station 1 recorded the lowest value of 3,714 ind/ha. The observed growth pattern at each station showed a negative alometric character with the value of B < 3, indicating that the growth of shell width was more dominant than the weight growth.

Results

The results of the study revealed that the physical-chemical factors of water, such as temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), dissolved organic matter (BOD), and salinity, had a very strong influence on the density of the population of blood shells on Cemara Kembar Beach. These factors play a crucial role in determining the health of ecosystems and the survival of blood shells.

Discussion

The study's findings provide valuable insights into the population density and growth pattern of blood shells on Cemara Kembar Beach. The results can be used to develop a better management strategy for the sustainability of marine resources. Additionally, the study's outcomes can serve as a reference for related parties in managing the potential of marine biota wisely and sustainably, providing benefits not only for ecosystems but also for the surrounding community.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study has contributed to the understanding of the population density and growth pattern of blood shells on Cemara Kembar Beach. The results have shown that physical-chemical factors of water have a significant impact on the density of blood shells. The study's findings can be used to inform management strategies for the sustainability of marine resources and provide insights for the development of sustainable tourism in the region.

Recommendations

Based on the study's findings, the following recommendations are made:

  1. Monitoring of physical-chemical factors: Regular monitoring of physical-chemical factors of water, such as temperature, DO, BOD, and salinity, is essential to ensure the health of ecosystems and the survival of blood shells.

  3. Sustainable tourism development: The study's outcomes can serve as a reference for the development of sustainable tourism in the region, ensuring that tourism activities do not harm the environment and the local community.

Limitations

This study has several limitations, including:

  1. Sampling method: The study used a systematic sampling point mapping approach, which may not be representative of the entire population of blood shells on Cemara Kembar Beach.
  2. Limited data: The study's data were collected over a short period, which may not be representative of the long-term trends and patterns of blood shell growth.
  3. Lack of control group: The study did not include a control group, which may have affected the accuracy of the results.

Future Research Directions

Future research directions include:

  1. Long-term monitoring: Long-term monitoring of physical-chemical factors of water and the density of blood shells is essential to understand the long-term trends and patterns of blood shell growth.
  2. Control group: The inclusion of a control group in future studies can help to improve the accuracy of the results and provide a more comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing blood shell growth.
  3. Multi-species study: A multi-species study can provide insights into the interactions between different species and the impact of human activities on the ecosystem.
