Introduction

Academic burnout, also known as academic fatigue, is a condition characterized by feelings of tiredness and lack of motivation caused by excessive academic pressure and stress. This phenomenon is often seen in students who are undergoing rigorous academic programs, such as those in the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra (FK USU). The purpose of this study is to describe the level of academic burnout among students of FK USU in 2023.

In this study, we aim to identify the prevalence of academic burnout among FK USU students and to explore the factors that contribute to it.

Methodology

This study employed a descriptive research design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 281 students from FK USU were randomly selected as respondents. Before filling out the questionnaire, a socialization session was conducted to explain the research objectives and to obtain informed consent from the participants. The Burnout Inventory School (SBI) was used as the measuring instrument to assess the level of academic burnout.

The data obtained were analyzed using univariate analysis and presented in the form of tables and statistics. The results of this study will provide valuable insights into the prevalence of academic burnout among FK USU students and will help to identify the factors that contribute to it.

Research Result

The results of this study showed that 91.5% of the respondents experienced symptoms of burnout. This is a significant finding, as it indicates that the majority of FK USU students are experiencing academic burnout. Furthermore, the results showed that 66.5% of the respondents who experienced burnout were within the age range of 19-20 years. In addition, the results showed that 39.1% of the respondents who came from outside Medan also experienced a significant level of burnout. Finally, the results showed that 23.4% of the respondents who were working on their final project or thesis also experienced symptoms of academic burnout. This is a critical finding, as it suggests that the pressure to complete academic projects can contribute to academic burnout.

Analysis

The results of this study highlight the prevalence of academic burnout among FK USU students. The high number of burnouts among young students suggests that they face enormous academic pressures, which may be caused by strict curriculum demands and expectations to achieve optimal results. The results also suggest that students who come from outside Medan may be more susceptible to academic burnout, possibly due to the challenges of adjusting to a new environment and being far from their family.

Furthermore, the results suggest that the pressure to complete academic projects can contribute to academic burnout.
